It doesn't "matter" in the same way that this game doesn't "matter." There's a civil war that's been raging in Syria since 2014, about as long as PoE has been around. None of this "matters."
I like to create custom characters in RPGs when the option is available. I don't typically play games where the feature is not available. It's enjoyable for me, and makes me feel more connected to my character. It's also weird to see a bunch of the same guy, since they are established characters after all, running around in the same world.
Personally this is not a deal breaker for me. I've played a decent amount of D2, a game which I love, and the characters being preset is fine, but that's because the game is just so good. PoE 2 looks to be the same. I'm still extremely excited to play it and not being able to make a character is not a deal breaker. If the option to purchase an alternate character model ever becomes available, I will probably buy it, if the cost is reasonable.
