Reminder: Selectable Character Gender is a "Minimum Bar."

You keep making the same non-arguments as in page 2 of the thread.

Just let the thread die in peace. It had a good run.

I'm getting awfully tired of seeing these suggested "cry poor" reasons as to why GGG isn't able to do this.

PoE2 has been in development for 5 years. They have already created new characters, and Jonathan himself has talked about how efficient and upgraded their modeling and rigging systems are. They are also 100% owned by Tencent, and a decent sized studio, not some indie dev. It's a massive multi-million dollar development project.

If they decide not to have gender options, it will be a decison made by Jonathan and Mark (mostly Jonathan) as game directors. Nothing else.

*** Also any suggestions this wouldn't fit their "narrative", doesn't hold up to the fact the game isn't even out. The narrative can literally be whatever they want it to be. I refuse to believe there are no male Rangers in Wraecrast, or a male Necromancer, or whatever else. It's an absurd argument to use, in order to excuse a lack of player options. ***

its not a decision of do we have male ranger or not, its a decision do we have male ranger instead of a boss encounter, you could use artist and animator to make a boss and voice act it, instead of male ranger. Its kind of zero sum game, it needs devs time and it has to come from somewhere. I think more bosses matters more. For all i care we could have 1 character mode, they all look the same anyway once i put christmas tree mtx
Not everybody puts the gaudiest, dumbest, most obnoxiously overdone MTXes in the game on every character they make. "It doesn't matter once I make the conscious decision to look like a Mardi Gras float" is not really a valid argument.

Oh. And I know how much the 90 or so voicelines of my sword cost. Yeah. Not cheap.

I know this is off topic, but are you the person that made Oni-Goroshi? I can't think of another sword that really has voice lines besides that one.

I am. I keep forgetting this isn't common knowledge among the forum regs.

That's cool man. I farmed it one time, many leagues ago.
So did a lot of people. Kinda bonkers really. I remember GGG tweeting about how many Hillocks had been murdered on the weekend of Oni-Goroshi's release. It was a ludicrous amount. I was like...wait, have I stumbled onto an actual good item design here?

Which was funny in itself because I had to fight pretty hard for some of the stats on that item. ;)

...And some of the voice lines, some of which I don't actually regret.

Anyway, yeah. that's me. Also, FWIW, I think The Goddess Scorned is the best designed of the three. Visually, stat-wise, even the flavour text. I'm most proud of that one. And I like that it can't be dropped, anywhere.

Okay, so this is an interesting wrap-around to NumbersR's original post -- I cannot imagine Oni-Goroshi as any gender but female. It's so key to what the weapon says. How it acts. Its...story, if you will. And I do feel that way about some of the lines the Exiles say, particularly the Ranger and the Witch (and what some of the antagonists say to them -- consider what Gravydude says to the Ranger, Witch and Scion; that's some hella gendered language, dude).

In contrast, I am fairly sure there is zero gendered language in all of DIV -- I have played the campaign through several times as both model type 1 and type 2, and noticed no real changes in the script. That's clever of them, because it saves writing extra lines pertinent to that selection.

BUT I've always loved how uncompromising PoE is with the notion of weaponised gender bias. Support deleted something I said earlier regarding the Ranger (IYKYK) but I found it so refreshing in 2012 when I talked about it with Chris multiple times. Lean into that shit, man. If it makes your fantasy world that much worse, that much better a setting for mass slaughter and bloody vengeance and all that, damn, go off.

I don't know if PoE 2 will continue this tradition but if so, it'd be a fine justification for genderlock. I am not in love with DIV's clever gender-safe dialogue at all. The writing itself was fine but the Player Character dialogue is starkly sparse. It is risk-free. And most of the antagonism is between the NPCs, not the PC. Which really is the Diablo tradition...but it's not PoE's. There was more personal antagonism and antagonising between the Player Character and Piety than in *any* Diablo game.

Twenty years was it? That's not really a long time for views and values to change naturally, but it's plenty of time for a new regime to force changes. Am I intrigued by what Wræclast will look and feel like in PoE 2? A little. Can't really get a grasp of it from the videos so far. All feels a bit generic...but I expect they're still figuring out the larger picture. Or saving it for later reveals.

GGG doesn't need to copy DIV.

As i see it, there is always the option to create a brand new set of characters for each class with their own models, voicelines and backstories.

I'm absolutely faithful that GGG would come up with great backstories and voicelines for these characters as they did with the newly created classes for PoE2.

It would be a tremendous amount of work that way for sure.
This is all weird to me. I dont play an avatar in POE. I play a game character. The only lines I care about in the game is the occasional voice lines when you are fighting bosses. They are fun. Definitely more fun than the ones in DIV. That said i got bored about level 60 or 70 and never touched the game again.

But whatever each his own. But yes you are right. If it helps other players to play the game and join the community it is a good thing. But i am also against it if it goes against their "vision". They should always make the game they want to make.

Agreed. But they're going to be far more conscious of it with PoE 2 than they were of D3 when developing PoE 1. Probably not in the narrative department, which is fine because as I made clear above I don't really dig how spartan and reactive the PC dialogue is in DIV. It suits what they've done but on repeat playthroughs it's kind of...safe.

I don't think any of the Exiles have a great back story in PoE 1 and I haven't looked at enough PoE 2 to judge. Have you some examples to share of PoE 2's character backgrounds?
