first you have to decide what you wanna play

This isn't strictly true, you can blunder through and be 'close enough' in that regard and finish the campaign. It's not going to be the best, but it will work. However, you are correct that the character will preform better if that choice is known earlier. But shifting between those fields is only a few regrets, not 'rebuild the tree from start' extensive.

yes, but maybe he wants to play something entirely different. in that case creating a character from scratch would be more feasible

and xjjanie is right. my first character was a nebuloch molten strike juggernaut and it was scuffed as hell although my friends were guiding me on the way. don't worry about it. find a league starter guide for the skill you like and see what gear and tree they have to understand how the build works

Not even sure I remember my first character at this point, think it was just 'fire witch', though the first one I got far in was a blink strike Duelist, but this was WAY back when act 4 was a rumor, and Diallia restarted the game.

Heck I -Still- brick characters once or twice a league.

Use Path of Exile wiki:

Every item and every skill has a page with useful info there.

Pretty big slog to go through especially for a beginner :S

Don't get me wrong, I agree that the PoE wiki is super useful for providing every detail needed, but if we look at it from a perspective of someone who just got to the game - it might be a tad bit overwhelming
