MMORPGs being dead? We are getting more new MMOs in next few years that we were getting in "golden era" my dude.

Yea but name a single good MMORPG. Pretty much all of them lack content, are straight up some china mtx cash grab junk, or are just pay2win in general.
The days of really good mmorpgs are just over and even games like final fantasy 14 or wow got gutted down to shit over the past years. Older other good existing mmorpgs got patched into shit as well, turned p2w or simply died out because of the two reasons.
Flames and madness. I'm so glad I didn't miss the fun.

ARPGs and MMOs are still kicking, RTS on the other hand...
It's strange how they just vanished, especially given how popular they were at some point.

They didnt rly vanish, more like they changed to fit new market. Nowadays we have "hybrids" of RTS + Tower Defense games (like There are biions for example)

I remember playing They are Billions, great game. The last level was awesome.
It's already 4 years old though, what other notable rts games can you even think of in recent history? The best we got is an Age of Empires 2 reskin or something.
Tower Defense games are an entirely separate genre if you ask me.

AoE4 came out last year. There’s also an upcoming one by some industry veterans called stormgate that claims to be following an ethical F2P formula.

Poe2 will fix all of that

It would if it would not be a separate game, which no one asked for.
Masterpiece of 3.16 lore
"A mysterious figure appears out of nowhere, trying to escape from something you can't see. She hands you a rusty-looking device called the Blood Crucible and urges you to implant it into your body."

Only usable with Ethanol Flasks

Name one good old MMO or H&S that would be good by todays standards. Shit like Lineage 2 or Diablo 2 are just garbage today. They dont have polish or 1/10th of content games today have. Its just our standards skyrocketed some time ago, no game can keep up with it.

Since i didnt play D2 when i was younger i had a chance to experience it after playing PoE, Wolcen and Torchlite. It was boring slogfest with nothing to do really, build diversity is in the gutter and game is simply boring. You are just blinded by nostalgia.

Its not that the games are worse. Its we that got more picky. We have seen mostly everything in some way so we dont see any innovation, every mechanic, every build, every activity is something we already did in other titles. Games are still good, we just have unrealistic expectations.

They are for sure ever since like 99% of the gaming industry puts their focus on money min-maxing rather than good game/content design. Most of the time you get a half unfinished or unpolished product for twice as much as you've paid for a fully functional game years ago.

1% of the good games with just great content and less money focus are just rare these days.
Years ago companies wanted to make amazing games or content patches with less of the focus to max their profits. But these days are just long gone and even old gems turned into nothing but small payment simulators. I used to play a good amount of mmorpgs years ago but they all ended up with the same issue. They started freaking amazing, had great content for every type of audience, rather limited p2w or pay stuff at all. But they all turned into nothing but watered down version of the game with lots of pay stuff and really low amounts of content.
Kinda sad to see that old school server or private server of some old games ended up with a higher player population than the original official version with all the garbage pay focused shit.
Flames and madness. I'm so glad I didn't miss the fun.

Most of them were cashgrabs, you just didnt care back then. Every single webzen, aeria games, ea game were. Its like that for 20 years, even more. And the games theselves were shallow compered to what we have now.

Sounds like you didn't really played much of the older good mmorpgs cause most of them didn't really offered much in the cashshop other than cosmetics or minor meaningless stuff while you get entire character progression, story skips, enchantment stuff and whatsoever in newer games.

New games these days are quite shallow. I mean look at lost ark for example, the game is in dev since quite a long time and offers barely any content at all.
Older games offered twice as much or even more content in less development time, more meaningful progression, quests, story, pvp and everything else to cater every type of audience. Lost ark is a terrible example, but you can pretty much say the same to every new mmorpg cause non of them offers much at all. Dry and short campaign, terrible pvp, lacking progression, lack of variety for customisation. What they all do share tho are the same patterns in cashshop or early access packs to cash in some extra money. Most of the new games don't even offer you a engaging combat system cause you just press 1 2 3 1 2 3 over and over again cause 5 or 6 skills is for sure not a shallow class design lol
Flames and madness. I'm so glad I didn't miss the fun.

I dont remember many mmo in old days, there was ultima online and tibia in late 90’s. They were good and popular in their time, but I wouldnt say they were great, and for sure wouldnt be so popular nowadays. Later was WoW and it is nearly same as it was. Heared a little bit of good things about Age of Conan when it was released but thats it.
EDIT on the other hand, we have great grand strategies nowadays, like Crusader Kings 2&3 or Hearts of Iron 4, Stellaris
Biggest compliments for my crafted items - "bs, they must have been RMT'ed"

I played most old mmos, im just not blinded by nostalgia. I started with tibia, than it was Mu online, Cabal, Shaiya, infinity online, archage, Rift, silkroad and tons and tons more. They were not good in any way, shape or form if you would campare them to todays standards. They always were cashgrabs. Tibia had premium, webzens IS is legendary in terms of P2W and so on. We just were kids and we didnt care that much.

We had to buy the games back then for a good amount of money.
But in most MMOs cases, that was not enough. We also had to pay a monthly subscripütion.
People nowadays want everything for free, so FTP games are the logic consequence.
BUT... games still have to earn money to persist and to justify updates.
That's where things come into play that you refer to as "cash grabs". ^^

Some Gatcha games, ok.. they are.
BUT regarding FTP MMOs... they got to finance them somehow, right?
