why is the PoE community so toxic?
" There's another option, you may have heard of it? It's being great at whatever you do, but also being humble and decent. It used to be a much more common thing, admittedly.
" No it wasn't, there just wasn't social media to blast someone's ego in everyone's faces, you think olmypians of the 1970's weren't bragging about their accomplishments? why are rules in math named some ridiculously complex name like laplacian or L'Hôpital's, because the people who do share that information share it for a reason, otherwise they wouldn't share it at all to begin with. what benefit is it for someone to share their insane build that cost 2 divs and clears all content? what is the reward they gain from doing so?
Answer: every internet community has some amount of carefree anonymous abrasiveness (aka toxic behavior) because that's the natural state of a significant percentage of all humans who exist under those conditions.
Our Selection bias does the rest. Hope this helps in all your future endeavors on the internet. "only 10% of players care about melee" - Aesop's Fox if he was a GGG dev

" Or its just as common but our selection bias blows the overly amplified examples of less decent people into a bigger non representative number than it really is. For non internet examples look at how many people think every park in the universe has a white pedo van parked at it due to decades of News stories about the .001% of cases. Or look up "satanic panic" It just started with the nightly news, then 24h cable news, then social media. Profit motivated Amplified spectacle + selection bias = "the world is a worse place now than it used to be" When its actually largely objectively better in almost every possible metric outside obvious profit driven environmental and mental health related ones. Its quite obvious that hundreds of thousands of years of growing up in tight nit face to face communities did not equip us to see and interact with a myriad of other people and cultures. Let alone come to grips with literally every spectacle or outlandish example of other communities loudest most visible clowns and fools. Overall, it's not really that toxic. PoE is a fairly complex game that requires dedication, patience, and frankly, effort to learn to play well.
There are many excellent guides that explain which builds are good for league-start or with a low budget. Persistently asking people questions that answers are readily available for, will make people annoyed. Understandably. People also way overuse the term toxic. Just because people aren't nice or willing to help all the time doesn't mean that the community is toxic. Nobody owes you anything. Try to figure it out by yourself first. You will learn a lot by doing that. That will allow you to ask better questions, and I'm sure that people will then be more than willing to answer them. |
