Why the XP penalty?

You don't deserve the higher level if you can't stop dying before gaining 10% xp tbh

This mechanic exist to punish you whenever you die in softcore, the purpose is to force you to take account into defensive mechanics, balancing it with your offensive stats.

Else people would just ignore all the defensive stats on the character and just go offense, the game wouldn't be fun otherwise when everyone dies left and right by making a bad character without getting punished.

What are your thoughts when you've spent a couple of months and years learning to do the hard contents, but in a sudden all the people completed all the hard contents in the game in 2 weeks by suiciding their way through and learnt nothing? Do you think this is fun?

do you really think anyone would accomplish anything by going full glass cannon? do you really think everyone enjoys dying to white trash? do you think your strawman argument does make any sense when it meets reality?
isnt the loss of a portal, the loss of a delirium/incursion/blight/legion/breach/syndicate encounter penality enough?

I HATE this argument.
Its total nonsense. Its a Strawman at its finest.

OF COURSE I WAS SO BLIND

why you're judging a fact like you're judging an opinion tho?

He asked why the exp penalty exist, so I gave him the answer.

Why you can't reach lvl 100 with glass cannon if there's no exp penalty?
If you're dying to some white monsters that's your problem honestly. Even with glass cannon builds.

And your point being?

I get it, but the purpose of leveling is to get to the end, in most games and cases. Leveling is not the fun part of any game. Most games, the end game is after you level, not while you level. I don't think POE would be easy if everyone would make it to max level.

There are too many complicated factors in the game already to not allow players to breeze though the content. Diablo 3 for example is a perfect example, you can do content 100x your level. Not to mention they don't make impossible to level either.
Not being able to get past 89 on softcore.

Then complaining about it.

Lol...
Remicaster can you comprehend my previous comment or nah?

everything those people who oppose this idea of "a penality free death"
say is "you just want to go glasscannon!!11"

weird assumptions and strawman arguments is all i see from you.

Honestly i would personally tell you to avoid setting max lvl as your goal. Set a more realistic goal such as lvl 92 (most builds finish by lvl 90). Lvl 100 in this game is basically grind. You do high tier maps you pay the risk of dying. To do it more safely, yellow map grind all the way through 100.

That's why lvl 100 exist on one of the 6 challenges on "Complete Endgsme Grind" challenge, and a lot of people do not recommend you to prioritize that farm because it is difficult

The game has something for players of all levels. I don't mean character level, I mean gaming ability. The game has plenty of content for average players like me. It also has content for higher end players, if they choose to do it, and are able to do it.

If there was no penalty, then literally anyone could get to 100. Even if you only killed one white monster before dying you'd eventually make it to 100. They don't want you to get to 100 that way.

Making it to 100 is not meant for everyone. There is lots of content for average and casual players. The higher end content provides a challenge for the players who are willing and able to do it. It gives the game appeal to a larger audience.

The penalty and some other things give the game a soft cap. The soft cap will be different for different players, depending on their ability and game knowledge. The soft cap effectively extends the game and makes it bigger.

The soft cap also challenges the player to get better. If they can't make it past that soft cap, then they are not ready for what lies beyond.

I remember when I commonly hit a wall at level 40 or less. There are still a lot of players who hit the wall that low. I got past that by persistence, learning how to make a character, and learning what I could get by with. Admittedly a lot of that was also due to power creep. The game is a lot easier now. But I also got better.

I hated the exp penalty also. I got past hating it by accepting it and getting better. I also accept that I will never be a top player. I accept that some content is for me and other content is for them.

Yea it sucks to die at higher levels. I usually get pissed off and shut the game down when it happens. Then I come back later and start creeping back up to recover what I lost. I'm stubborn and I'm going to get to that next level, even if that means +11 -10 +11 -10 the whole way.

It's entirely optional though, for those who want to do it. That option increases the player base.

It's part of the grind.

Discontent fuels retention! Competitive toxicity fuels obsession! Game companies live and die by this maxim. Let players have what they believe they want most, and they will walk away.

Getting punished for being weak stings. Being told to git gud stings. And yet here you are, back for more punishment and humiliation. Game the system back. Hop on trade and arbitrage like a used car salesman on You Bet Your Life.

There's an Indian guy who turns 300c an hour profit with a custom lootfilter. You know what it shows?

And that's it. Legit the ONLY other thing he makes time to pick up are exalts and maps.

--No rares
--No chaos recipe
--No uniques
--no frags, splints, incubators, widgets, gewgaws, whatsits, or dongles.

300C because people clamor for slips of paper that they in turn arbitrage into vendor currency, alt shards, alchs, etc. He lets THEM deal with buyers and exchange rates and bulky inventories and crafting and sorting and listing items on premium tabs and haggling and all that. While he does repetitive content at an intensity he can handle because he's not inclined to over-juice or spend loads of currency on endgame boss portals.

When he's done he just quietly changes out for exalts and buys something really nicely made or BiS for his build.

I still liked my idea for this

If you can kill the mob that killed you you gain the exp from the mob + the exp it stole from you on death

This mob will be Empowered with the Sprite of an Exile and be glowing like ghosts do to mobs
This mob will gain the "Empowered with the Sprite of an Exile" mod

This new mod can do whatever GGG sees fit to make the mob harder to regain your exp lost back

... could make it a clone of yourself but way harder since it has the buff that would be funny :D
