so does fortune favors the brave give you one of the mods on the map device or it can be anything (league mechanics that are not currently on the map device as well)?

only the options that are available to purchase
There's an open question on what's the difference between Shaping the Mountains (add free random craft) and Shaping the Skies (free use of special map crafting option). People are asking Bex if the two are the same thing, or if one of them can give mods that are not one of Kirac's set mods.

I don't tend to be a good target farmer so I may just go Fortune of the Brave every map and hope for the best over the long haul.

I'm definitely taking the Shaping the Valleys node for that reason. Just alch n go and see which random mechanic gets added to the map along with my metamorphs and my tormented rogue exiles.

Speaking of this, the atlas tree definitely made up my mind 100% to go guardian. I'm expecting some pretty rippy stuff with a bunch of ghosted rogue exiles and random metamorphs running around. :-)

I'd also like to prioritize tankyness...what makes guardian superior in this regard compared to the inquisitor version? from the ascendancy tree, only thing i noticed is more energy shield pool (about 300 more). both version has capped phys reduction and block chance.

The best way to see the tankiest difference is to go into the calcs window and compare the EHP of both versions. You should see Guardian with significantly higher EHP across the board.

If you are playing this build for the first time, I still strongly suggest you go with the no crit elementalist version. It is stills super tanky and much easier to level/gear/play. I've done (as elementalist) Sirius A8 deathless in 3.16, where I just tanked the die beams. The only thing that can kill is that maze thing he does.

definitely considering this but im a sucker for righteous fire so i really wanna squeeze that in. Also asenath gloves are a must for me as im just used to map zooming, but im sure that wont be too difficult to fit in in the elementalist version.

Im trying to make the inquisitor version tankier and I see a few differences that contributed to the much higher EHP for the guardian version on pob:

1. guard skill is counted into the effective pool, since guardian has a lot of armour hence molten shell is capped at 10000 vs inquisitor 8000. however molten shell cooldown is 4 secs so uptime is less than half.

2. pob is not calculating the phys ehp correctly for inquisitor/elementalist version...it's counting in the vulnerability effect where it should be mitigated by watcher's eye. guardian tree doesnt have this issue since its hexproof (from viridi)

3. guradian version is not using glancing blow but bastion of hope uptime is only 2 out of 5 seconds. you are at 38% attack block chance when its down.

4. how does guardian get fortification?

it doesn't. Since POB does not yet account for SAP, some people select Fortify to have a general representation of SAP from Leadership's Price.

If you want to compare apples to apples, either select Fortify on both Guardian and Inquisitor versions, or do not select Fortify on either versions.

That is an excellent observation! I should have noticed that myself.

Is there anything we can do in the custom window to help account for the fact that we are not Vulnerable? I think this will work as a temp fix:

"You are Hexproof" in the custom window I think takes away Vulnerability
