Everyone knows the FBI investigation was started by a hoax dossier put together, and financed, under the direction of Democratic opposition to Trump.

The way to not "allow this to happen" is to not commit crimes and purposely hire Kremlin operatives to work in your campaign. Trump isn't king. If he were innocent as he claims (he's not), from the very beginning he should have cooperated instead of falsely calling anyone and everyone investigating Russian interference and the media covering it the enemy.

Actually, the Marco Rubio campaign likely provided the initial funding for the Steele dossier, using the Washington Free Beacon as an intermediary. Not wanting opposition research to go to waste, the Washington Free Beacon handed the operation over to the Clinton campaign (using a law firm as an intermediary) after it was clear that Rubio wasn't going to be nominated ~May 2016.

This could be true, or it could be a cover story. The Steele dossier claims within its own text that it wasn't compiled until June 2016, but if that's the case what was Steele doing while working for Rubio? Chronologically, the Australian story and the compiling of the Steele dossier happened nearly simultaneously, and curiously the Australian puts Manafort in London for the drinking party, when London was Steele's primary base of operations.

Regardless of source, I believe rather strongly that accusations, whether from Steele or from eavesdropping on Manafort, made their way to the FBI around May and to GOP establishment types like Rubio and McCain shortly thereafter if not prior. Many of you have short memories, but there was a quiet controversy shortly before the Republican National Convention in July 2016 regarding whether they'd cheat Trump out of the nomination; I suspect GOP leadership was aware of the Steele dossier and/or similar allegations at that time. This is also noticeably when the mainstream media stopped covering Trump positively and went into attack mode.

Just as a reminder, Papa D got 12 days (yes days) of prison for lying to the FBI. No collusion.
