Viper Strike

it does not. puncture DoT does not either. from self testing.
That's inexcusably terrible.

Finally thought I found a skill that could benefit from CoMK. Nope!

They can cause players to get out of their depth -
playing maps that are too hard for the items they currently have. Herp Derp.
Sadly DoTs are not, in fact, melee damage sources.

Supported Melee Attacks have a (50 to ?)% chance to Cast Supported Spells on Kill

GGG needs to hire someone trained in symbolic logic to write their skill descriptions.

They don't make fucking sense.

Is Viper Strike a "Melee Attack"? Yes.

Did you kill an enemy with it? Yes.

Then why the hell wouldn't Cast on Melee Kill work?

"Well because damage that comes from a melee attack that applies over time as opposed to a single instance associated with the attack animation doesn't actually count as being a "melee attack."

FUCK YOU, hypothetical asshole! It doesn't say in CoMK that it has to be melee damage, it just has to be a "supported melee attack." The skill gem says "melee attack." That should be sufficient based on the criteria set for the support gem.

If they want dumb restrictions, put it in the fucking skill descriptions PROPERLY.

It's fascinating to see how angry people can get over simple things like a potentially inaccurate description. :)
Not angry. Just hyperbolic.

There are lots of instances like that, throughout the game. It's pretty frustrating that they can't keep conditional statements straight. I mean, theoretically they employ some programmers, so they should understand that sort of thing?

Bit of a update.

My thoughts after getting the gear I want? Viper Strike is a viable build. It's expensive to get it set up right, but is very viable in solo or party play, even with chaos-rez mobs. If you can stack high MF, that's even better for party play.

The key things needed are these:
1. Bino's Kitchen Knife
2. lvl20 Viper Strike (quality if possible)
3. lvl 2/3 Empower
4. All DoT/chaos dmg passives

The rest of the tree is really spent on defense, some mana-passives, and attack speed.

Current build at lvl 85

Viper Strike DoT dmg calculations: (VSD)
- 289.5 at lvl 20, 324.1 at lvl 21 w/ lvl 2 Empower.
> 324.1 * [1 + 1.62 (from passives) + .22 (from Culling Strike) + .30 (from Bino's)]
> = 1017.674 DoT dmg per charge, x4 VScharges = 4070.696

With Vulnerability: (VSDwV)
> 324.1 * [1 + 1.62 (from passives) + .22 (from Culling Strike) + .30 (from Bino's)] * 1.40 (from Vulnerability)
> = 1424.744 DoT dmg per charge, x4 VScharges = 5698.974
***Vulnerability is multiplicative with VS, and additive with Shock

Calculating Melee Splash effects: MSplash @ lvl 20
> VSD/wV * (1-.16) for single target
> VSD/wV * (1-.31) for AoE

So even with all the passives, the best DoT unique, a 20/20 viper and culling and vulnerability, you still can't break 6k dps with the charges?

You're even skipping weapon damage nodes to get the DoT nodes, so your attack damage isn't all too impressive either.

You can't leech off of the DoT, it doesn't work with bino's bonus and (I think) it doesn't even trigger culling?

I dunno, seems to me viper strike could use a buff.
It's kind of a shitty attack.

Other skills can one-shot entire groups with a single click.

Viper Strike takes at least 4, and then you have to wait. For one enemy to die. If you use Melee Splash, then you have to wait longer.

Very ho-hum.

Against groups? Ho-hum indeed.

Against big enemies? Much less so.

Well it depends.

Viper Strike pretty much caps out at 20k per second single target damage, with the best gear, all passives, etc.

When other builds can inflict 60k+ over groups, it's not very impressive.
