Gearing for pvp is very similar with gearing high level characters for doing 78maps. PvP is an alternate endgame option, and its only natural that if you want to be rewarded you will have to invest hard on it. You can still though spend max 4-5 ex and still be top 20 constantly (i know from personal experience, and most costly items are the quality gem nontheless, so even with 2 ex its possible). But if you are chasing the victor's talismans then you should invest heavily on that pvp char of yours (and i mean 20+ex or over-the-top-super-ultra-no-life-24/7-pvp farming), and you can actually see the invisible gear line at the events.

Hege said something about 50+ exalts... It just blows my mind.

A few questions to Hege:

1) How many exalts did you invest in your char in the previous league?

and

2) Why don't you ask the people of your chat that don't pvp why they don't and tell us. I would be delighted to know, since they are interested enough to watch you do it.

You also have to understand the huge diminishing returns in LLD, buying a 6L won't improve a build more than 10% at the most, and it alone costs more than an entire build altogether. People like Hege min-max as much as possible, but that doesn't mean him having spent 50 outclasses me thrice over gear-wise even though I just spent 15.

I watch Hege's stream every day, and a few other streamers. I like having it on in the back ground / 2nd monitor while I'm playing.
I enjoy watching the pvp because I like to see what others enjoy about the game even though I personally do not enjoy pvp at all and do not and will not participate in it.

Reading this thread I am a little amazed at some people. Maybe I am reading the posts wrong but seems some of you take issue with Hege and from watching maybe 50 streamers over the last month and most of the "popular" ones I think Hege is one of the most level headed and nicest people that streams. A lot of people are total dickwads, a couple even went so far as to say shit like "Donate or gtfo my stream" and some just want to wag that epeen around with their elite gear. Shit I have never seen from Hege and doubt I ever will.

1. 50-55 exalts. most expensive things were pillar 6L (12ex) and 6L foxshade (25ex)

2. I have asked. The ones that don't pvp say they don't think they'll be able to compete because they're poor. But they do enjoy watching is as a spectator.

Well, i don't think there is anything else to add. That's your problem right there.

PoE is ruthless game and people are poor. PvP is that extra something for the top-end time dedicating players like you who have nothing else to do in the main game.
I'm a forum warrior, i was born to post, raised to defend my league. Now my post has been removed, chained and exiled by mods who Ban. Ban is my brother; i do not fear it. I see it in the eyes of men and beasts that i troll. It will take me to play the actual game when i am ready and i am not ready.
Yeah, I love watching hege's stream, especially the LLD, and I'd like to give pvp a chance, but being so incredibly poor in PvE makes me really not want to go into pvp scene.

In bloodlines I ripped one 5L Doomsower and belly after which it was really hard to get back on my feet. My BL char now doesn't even have a 5L armor, and I'm sitting at 2 ex max of currency. Even if I had 10ex magically appear in my stash, I'd rather get my BL character a 5L armor then start building a pvp char.

Even hegemony had to have a guy 'borrow' him 40ex to get things started (although special circumstances have to be taken in mind). A lot of people are poor in PoE, me included. No matter how small an investment some people think you need to be competetive in PoE, it will still be too much, especially when you need to split that meager amount of currency between PvE and PvP.

No mod action. Business as usual.

There's like only 5 well known people who even stream pvp, some of whom do so inconsistently. I mean, when's the last time you've seen willy stream pvp? How many of the "50" or so streamers you claim you have watched over the last 1 month, even pvp? Who are these streamers saying "donate or gtfo"? I've watched enough Path streams to know that this all sounds like exaggerated bullshit.

This should only be true for HLD, but not for LLD. Sadly it isn't.

I am also a long time viewer of Hege and Willy (Eccmecc some might know me). Both actually encouraged me to try PvP. First a few events in season 1 and now with more effort in season 2.

I am not even close to the wealth of other people. I spend around 2 exalt for my gear and purchased right before the begin of the season a +1 tabula for 4 exalt. I am not playing for demis (I wouldn't even with more expensive gear because the lack of experience and practice versus veteran pvpers). But I can get some good results in events. It's a hell of a fun and the events are the highlight of my day, I am looking forward to.

Every person that claims they can't get into pvp because they don't have the currency, don't want to play anyways, imo. Because everybody can scrap together some exalts and find some fitting build in the forum (or craft his own build). Lazyness or the urge to horde the currency hinders people to experience one of the most fun aspects of the game.

The only way I see to encourage these people to start playing, is to give them rewards they feel that it worths the effort and investment of currency. Nowadays gamers don't play for the fun alone, they need a little push to get hooked.

If more people with less experince and gear would start playing, they would play each other. This would be fun for them since they won't get stomped by someone with more expensive gear.

clearly you dont know the definition of anyone.
if you honestly think 1 exalted orb spent on what is most certainly a frivolity is considered normal , you are out of touch.

that is what pvp is to the community at large , a frivolity. you dont gain wealth from it (unless you are very good) you dont gain experiences , you dont level gems. you are there purely for the hell of it or because you enjoy it.

but this is a game about grinding trading and making money. and the sad reality is that the players that are good enough to get the *few exalteds needed for pvp* are already the ones doing pvp and lobbying for others to join them. you are correct in thinking some sort of reward is necessary .

so if it isnt rewarding and requires investment , it better be fun. well sorry to say frustrating rock paper scissor matches where one thing just face rolls another thing or a player with 50+ exa in gear crushing some boob with some unique items will not be fun.

i spent 3 hours yesterday pvping, I played one person that gave me a good match and that was because we were both summoners experimenting with eachothers builds.

i played 4 others where my guardian one shotted them , or 8 skeletons hacked them to pieces or 3 zombies stun locked them and murdered them instantly .

and then there was 1 fella that flickered right to me , did 1600 dps , and insta popped me because summoners have to re-summon all of their shit every time.

and that is pvp.

if people cant scrap a few exalts extra (especially on sc leagues where if you die you don't have to invest in another char from the ground up) then they know very little about the game and have a lot of other stuff to learn before dabbling in hobbies like pvp.

i guess you didnt read it , i never said people cant get exalted orbs , what i said was people don't want to waste their exalted orbs on pvp. that is a considerable difference

anyone can get 10 exalted orbs in a temp league or whatever, not many people would then turn around and spend those exalted orbs on pvp. not when most people want to invest 50+ exalted orbs perfecting the dps on their pve characters

if you make say 100 exa , sure 10 exa , drop in the bucket. you make 20 exa? well 10 is half your net worth, most people would agree with all the over priced shit in this game , wasting what money you have on pvp is ... stupid.

and they do since pvp is very unpopular indeed
