Should I try to make my own build?
|
I have 4k hours of PoE on Steam, however most of them are tornado shot archer. So my knowledge about other builds, mechanics, uniques is pretty limited. However, copy/pasting somebody else's build doesn't satisfy me. On the other hand, I don't want to waste my hours for a potentialy disaster build. Is it worth making your own build? If so please tell me a skill that I'm unlikely to fail. Thanks!

Not worth it, you will waste hours trying to fix the defences/dps of your character just for it to be 1/8 as useful as your main. I would only recommend creating your own build in ssf, ideally ruthless since you need to be more resourceful in that game mode.
Else you'll probably waste 100s of divines creating bricked characters. |

Why wouldn't you make your own build.
People are way too obsessed with currency per hour. If you have a character that makes currency what else is there to do but experiment. Take the Vaal Temptation support. No one uses it because it's hard to solve the drawbacks. PoE is a puzzle. |

Honestly, there is no simple answer because it depends on your definition of an "own build." If you pick a niche skill, it can be brutal... many gems are mechanically weaker than meta skills and require deep knowledge to scale.
However, if you want to find your own solutions: Go for it. I personally wouldn’t play a league without building something unique. It’s what keeps the game alive. My advice for your first attempt: Pick a Skill: Watch videos and find something that looks fun. Reverse Engineer: Look at poe.ninja for that skill. Sort by DPS and EHP. Understand how they scale it, then decide what you want to do differently. Solve the Essentials: Every build needs a plan for: Damage: Clear vs. Single Target. Defense: Max Hit (Resists, Suppression, Armor) and Avoidance (Block/Evasion). Recovery: Leech, Regen, or Gain on Hit. -> Dont forget recovery for whatever your using as ressource to use your skills! Movement: Don't ignore this! The Bottom Line: It will cost you more currency and you might hit a wall, but every "fail" increases your knowledge. For me, following guides would make the game boring after two weeks. A build rarely "fails" completely... it just takes more investment and experience to make it shine. Try it. It changes the game entirely! |

You can take some parts of a build and create your own version. That makes the most sense to me and I've been doing that for some time.

The only question you have to answer is what makes the game fun for you and your answer lies there.

Short answer: yes.
Don’t lock yourself into the artificially popular “meta” builds that content creators recycle as the only viable path. Step outside those forced popularity lists and you’ll find the game has a lot more depth, variety, and genuinely fun options than what’s being pushed as “optimal.” Hobby Gamer and Professional Software Engineer & Systems Architect from Tennessee

Before trying new thing play something very different from current experience.
In my case RF from Phox was the most learning experience. Ive learned so much, understood so many things. Still consider myself "noob" but before that my own ideas took me to maps T3-4, sometimes to T5. After RF adventure i get to T16s. Phox has these several hours materials where he levels up char from 1 to 70's - hes basically playing new char and expleining everything. |

I’m in my second season and already experimenting with custom tweaks on meta builds.
My ultimate goal isn't to maximize Divines per hour, but to master the game's mechanics enough to run my own builds. Since league currency is temporary, I prefer the lasting satisfaction of theorycrafting over an endless grind for wealth. |
