Update: Noticed my GPU hit about 82c while playing poe. This in itself shouldn't really be a problem as the RTX 5090 is rated for 90c, but I figured maybe I can do something about it.

tl;dr: was able to reduce GPU temps by about 10c, to around 70c. Now the game no longer crashes.

I don't know if this is an actual fix, I've been playing for about an hour and no issues yet.

If I had to take a guess, I read somewhere that the error I've linked before was about the GPU going from idle to performance mode, which then triggers a bug in the driver that crashes it. Maybe my GPU somehow goes into some kind of temporary idle mode to cool down a bit then go back into performance mode, which then crashes the driver.

I don't know if this will help anyone, but figured I'd post it. Good luck exiles.

This doesn't work for me. My 4090 was hitting like 80+ too, the worst of it comes when I open the merc window or have tons of map effects/monsters on screen. It'd climb from 60-85 within seconds. I ended up undervolting the card so it doesn't go above 80 now, but the renderer still crashes no matter if it's dx12 or vulkan.

I ended up setting a way more aggressive fan curve too. Maybe you can try that too. If it doesn't work, then we'll just have to wait till GGG tells us anything about this problem unfortunately.

Hi guys, i found a possible solution... for now i am without crash for about 4 hours...

go to production_Config.ini file, localized in
"C:\Users\YOUR_USER\Documents\My Games\Path of Exile"

edit two lines in this file:

renderer_type=Vulkan
device_type=Vulkan

If you already changed in game the Dx12 or Dx11 to Vulkan, probably the "device_type" is already setted to vulkan... but "renderer_type" still setted to Dx12, so, change to vulkan in this file.

Besides that, i also changed the file to READ_ONLY, preventing POE to change without need.

i Hope it solve your problems. <3

UPDATE :
It worked ! ; I don't know what spaghetti code GGG has but in my case this change made me able to play the whole day (4-5 hours) without a single issue; thank you man you are my saviour :D

I will still bump the post from time to time , since there are a lot of people that are having this issue and it's probably related to the rendering driver crashing for some unknown reason ... so GGG should still fix this problem for everyone !!!
Guys, device_type=Vulkan isn't even an option anymore.

5090 + 9800x3d, black screens every 10 mins, only hard reebot work to use PC again, GGG HELP, wtf?
Hello,

I have been having this issue since a year now. It seems really random. As you mention, once or twice a day and for no apparent reason the screen will go black, you will hear distorted audio and the fans will go crazy.

The funny thing is that after restarting everything works fine. It does not happen every day either.

My specs (less than 2y old computer) are kind of similar to yours and I have not been able to find a fix.

13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-13700KF (3.40 GHz)
32 GB DDR
RTX 4080 16gb
W11 pro

Truly frustrating. I have tried other games and for example in Dota2 the same happens. Some days it has also occurred while watching youtube.

Switching to Vulkan does not seem an option since that is a different renderer.

Truly given up with it. I have read many posts in reddit and in other forums and a lot of people point the issue to the power cable to the RTX or PSU.

This is what I find in the logs
