The vision is schizophrenic. Queue next league's content being any monster that you leave alive on the map can use your remaining portals to come in the hideout and kill your NPCs, turning the game in an elaborate Blight map in said hideout. Probably after you're out of NPCs they'll disassemble the map device and bugger off leaving you the option to reroll a new character for a new chance at mapping.
In an extra kiss and curse type of scenario, the mobs might give you a cage with Navali inside in return for the mapp device's parts.
I'm calling it "Path of Exile : Electric Boogaloo" and it serves as a prequel to PoE 2
