NAME: The Hidden Basement

THEME: Steam powered (Steampunk) grim basement

LEAGUE: Standard

I love the overall darkish theme of Path Of Exile, so I wanted my hideout to fit in well. The hideout is a steam powered grim and gritty basement where bad things happen.

It has a big torture room and a jail, mysterious steam powered machines, pipes, steam powered map device, the air is dense and you can smell the fear of everybody who ever stepped inside it's walls.

Above this horrifying place is a tavern called The Siren which is located in the City of Sarn docks. Drunken songs sang by Sarn sailors, misfits and criminals and everyday fights help to cover up the screaming and moaning of tortured victims.

There is a rumour that the creator of this steam powered basement was a member of Vaal engineers who built The Ancient Pyramid and Vaal Oversoul!

1. Main Room - East side

2. Main Room - Waypoint

The Waypoint can easily be concealed and powered off

3. Main Room - West side

4. The hall to Torture chambers

5. Torture chambers

Steam powered torture devices

6. Torture chambers - Fermat's room

The most horrifying room in Wraeclast - Steam powered shrinking room with spiky walls

7. The Boiler room and Jail

8. The Map Device room

Steam powered map device. The only thing missing is a Steam powered portal effect, which I, sadly, don't have.

I hope you enjoyed it and got a few ideas for your next hideout!

Theme: The Tinkerers Island Ruins

League: Standard

Base: Coastal Hideout

Sorry for all the mess, but it's so much work to clean the place up! Flies are just everywhere. I just can't get rid of them.

Short Background

Offshore of Waerclast lies a small island. Ruins of a small harbor and the basement of a building are still there. Ancient devices indicate a military or research history it's path is shrouded.

With the help of the masters, some devices could crudely reconstructed.

Album: http://imgur.com/a/q4Hpw

Paths and Railways are used to cover almost all sand. Bricks create rough stairs on the slopes.

1. Teleporter area (used to be able to teleport whole carts)
Contains most workbenches. Grindstone and Armory bench in a small smithy. Fountain and Artisan's bench are inside two devices.
The area is surrounded by overgrown pillars and walls to make it into a forecourt.

Map Device
The Map device is inside the ruins of an old Building (made with black Pillars and Church walls) . The device is inside a lot of other devices to almost cover it up. The whole Building foundation is covered by a force field.

Small Balcony
On the back of the Building on the hill was some space left, that I made into a small balcony where Leo is resting.

Gate and Furnece The entrance to the forecourt.
The lamps that can be found all over the island are done using an Excavation device and a Stand lamb and pipes always go into them.

4. Stash and Vorici
The stash is in the ruins of an old building filled with stuff. The building had no roof, so it's covered with a Large Tent. Vorici is standing guard.

5. Headstone and Catarina Inside the ship remains.
Impaled offers have to be made to power the device that contains Catarinas Headstone. (It's socketed on pipes and a Gear in the water).

6. Harbor
The ruined Harbor covers almost half the beach. It is made of Crypt Tombs and Spindles to create a harbor front. Paths cover up the sand. A few Exiles rest and fish below it between rubble and the ship remains.

Edge of Madness: The Corrupted Outpost

Hideout Template: Immaculate Hideout Level 3
League: Standard
Theme: Corruption has spread to this remote outpost and now, disease and dysentery has taken over.

Backstory: For the past while, we have been going out and battling the corruption where ever we can find it. But, what about our own personal reasons for risking death to smite evil?

This outpost is the sad loser in the war against corrupted souls. People are dying off at an alarming rate and the problem keeps getting worse and no one really knows why. Is this outpost cursed? Is there some force that has deemed everyone here suffer beyond measure?

Why are more and more people getting sick?

The tainted well in the middle of the outpost seems to be causing the spread of a strange plague.

Immaculate Hideout Characteristics and challenges.

The one thing I really liked about this layout was the three distinct areas, which were connected by a "T" junction (a pseudo-forth area). The other design characteristic which opens up creative options is the 3 different platform "levels", where you can take advantage of the y-axis.

The unique features to this template was definitely the water basin in the lower level. (Warning: pun incoming) So many ideas flow from this area for me.

The hardest part of this template was the half circle open area in the main area. I didn't want to populate it with anything too high that would obstruct the main view, however, I was intent on covering the whole "Solaris" look since it didn't fit with my old dilapidated outpost theme.

My idea kind of extended from the inside to the outside with the buildings, and started framing everything with the church wall decorations. It seemed to tie the inside to the outside quite well and solve some placement options for lighting effects and covering the stock tile set.

Within each room, there were other challenges; Mostly with covering up the Solaris tile set (some are quite hard to hide even using large rocks or building objects). I wanted to expand the design area as much as possible so the room looked "bigger" than the default tile set. The immaculate hideout has these "C" nooks all over the edges of the usable surface, which I used to place extended range objects. Long floor peices, buildings, colossal statue pieces, walls and other very large objects did a good job at adding more real-estate and did a great job in being efficient (in terms of limiting object total per area).

I think some of the hardest things to do with any of the hideout designs, is add some depth and dimension. All the objects sit on the same plane - which means that you cannot have carpet tiles sitting on top of a table (for example). Beyond adding trees and buildings, there is not much option to create levels in the design.

What I did to get around this, was to find objects with matching heights that could achieve a certain effect. The Vaal table and the map device is a good example. Another is using stone slabs and taller plants to give the appearance of an extruded rock face.

The other constraint was the template lighting sources were blocked out if you tried to add taller objects such as cranes, trees or buildings. I had to utilize various other objects that had lighting effects. The bird cage gave me blue, the fire/torches give you orange and other colours and effects are available through the MTX or master objects.

In order to balance the lighting, I was able to use the stock lighting for Vorici's mechanical room. Catarina's green aura was strong enough to cover much of the water filtering room, and strategic placing of fire torches and lamps took away other lighting gaps.

Other challenges. Other than Elreon's bookshelves, I had a hard time incorporating this masters objects into anything due to the poor scaling. The prison table is massive, as are other objects. Also, Leo looks like a giant standing beside Zana.

I wish there were more exile textures. 2-3 variants is just not enough. Even just different rags or clothes options would be nice.

A living scene:
I took each areas and made them as much a living scene as possible. Flies near the spoiling bodies, Leo and his crafting area look like he lives there, Water containers near the well, Exiles standing/sitting/lying around in various conversations or states of decline. The Armoursmith area looks like it actually produces metalworks... etc

There are bugs and other things running around (about 20 weta pets, blood worm, disembodied hand/head). Smoke billows out from the Kiln due to the burning catapult ball effects. Electricity charges flow throughout Vorici's machine. Very subtle use of the fog effects.

Design rules I had to follow:
-Everything needed to commit to the core theme. I needed to make sure that I was not married to any specific idea or object (a.k.a piles of gold or a "torture" room.)
-Each area needed to be consistent/mesh with the adjoining room.
-Maintain as much open space as possible and avoid the hoarder syndrome.
-pick 2-3 "features" to fully design, focus on and detail. In this case, it was Vorici's machine, the Kiln and the path of blood into the water.
-Lighting needed to be used to not only highlight, but mask.
-Be as object efficient as possible.
-Balance the indoor/outdoor objects. (for example, the sewer exhaust tube is running out of a mountain rock face. The buildings used inside were detailed to look like wall structures. Trees and bushes outside and the "tent" illustrate that you are outside the outpost.

My Hideout theme is 'Golden Granary'. I have mounds of Gold here, there and everywhere. Why? Because I'm attempting to entice a Dragon to aid me in my further conquest of Wraeclast's twisted abodes.

Thanks for taking a gander at my H/O design. I'm very impressed by some other designs I have seen in this thread. Great work everyone. You've inspired me to continue to farm masters quests for levels and decoration points to further improve my design. Good luck!

Hi there.
First I have to admit, this is no "special creation", it's just grown with time.
I always wanted to make something with a large throne-room, a nice garden and some kind of
"dark place" - well, this is what came out of it. While finding a name for it, I came over
"The Palace Garden", "Death & Glory" and ended up at "The King & The Witch".

- Edit: Since the contest isn't closed by now, I decided for a little rename.
"The King's Garden" ! Maybe that's a little more "appropriate" -

Here are some images (cut), the whole album is to be found here:
http://imgur.com/a/ZMc1I

first - the entrance:

Elreon's place and supplies:

downstairs:

Tora's place (to the left there's a little "Forest"):

Catarina's place (don't wanna know what comes out of that tomb once she's finished)

upstairs:

carfting site, map device & stocks

...and finally - the throne-room (Zana's place is behind it, see the album)

Thanks for watching. ;)
