I realized that in the trailers there is no mouse (or arrow to be correct). am I over-thinking things or am I actually on to something? Or, has this changed during the Alpha testing? Pretty much - basically, it uses your cursor's position from your general operating system rather than having separate art for it - so, you can have Path of Exile windowed and fool around with other stuff on the side if you're in town or otherwise unoccupied. There's probably going to be a server wipe during the transition to open beta, but there's unlikely to be other wipes unless deemed necessary by GGG.
