They're trying to add more crafting mechanics to the game. You know its alpha right? They will find what works, what doesnt and likely increase the effects. They dont want a crafting bench. This effectively will get you similar results, but make it farmable.

Runes are being dramatically expanded in terms of how they are used, making them multi-purpose. We're just going to have to trust that the introduction of dozens more runes is necessary. We'll only know once we get to play 0.5
I have faith. |

" Solution to what? Socketables are fun. They give build variety and expand the loot pool. I see not downside. |

in 1.0 they will add 500 more.
Mark says "we need more more more more". So they deliver. The Path Of Bloated 2. Last edited by Azimuthus#1135 on May 16, 2026, 5:07:44 PM

" No one's talking about them because the possibility of more was never anticipated or asked for. People talk about what excites them, what they hope will come to the game. New classes, new skills, new weapons, new boss fights, fixes to bugs or design flaws, that's what people talk about. AFAIK I never saw a single thread or comment asking for more runes, but I could have missed that of course. You might see some people after the fact try to say its a great addition, but I'm pretty sure they were going to praise whatever was announced for 0.5...........but I'll admit, I could be wrong. There could be a silent majority, or a huge fan base for more runes that just isn't as likely to post on the boards for whatever reason. I'll concede the game devs should know better than I do what people want, but it did come as a surprise to me, or at least the fact that the addition of so many runes was apparently prioritized over all those things I mentioned above that drive more conversation. |

" Are they though? I ignore almost all of them and just slot iron runes. |
|
" Yes they do. The thing with having a big variety of sockatables is not that you -need- to socket all of them or have a different item in every socket, its just that it gives you options in solving issues with your build. e.g. you have issues capping your resistance because your build relies on too many uniques? You are missing just a little tiny bit of spirit but can't squeeze it in on any gear piece ? Need some additional source for rage because of your location on the passive tree? and so on. Of course you can, if in doubt, just socket the generic upgrade runes into the gear piece - nothing wrong with that - but i like to have options that I can use creatively. It seems the additional runes will be even more specific and might even be build enabling (with damage conversion runes for example) - so i think its exciting. If you are not a build creator or don't want to bother researching: just take them as an addition to the valuable drops pool and ignore them otherwise. |

I fail to see how anyone would find augments to be fun
The difference between a lesser rune, a regular rune and a greater rune is usually +2 increased something, we have 3 variants for each type of rune where the increment is negligible |

I'm more curious to see how the socketable tab will look like, honestly. Like, right now it's already tight and you have to remember the socketables by position because their icon is quite small, let alone with the new ones
I think eventually they will have to rework the whole rune system and cut the small, medium, big runes to just a single rune for each stat Also, I just finished a couple of "speedruns" through campaign, and something that felt quite odd is that while you do get quite a few runes now, socket slots on gear is still the same as it was in the past except for some artificer's orb that they added to specific quests and monsters It's going to be interesting to see how a league based on runes deals with this in the campaign. They better give a lot of artificer's orb, or it will feel pretty bad Last edited by iHiems#0168 on May 16, 2026, 9:54:51 PM
