Ranger feels like it is extremely outdated due to lack of defensive options
|
Hello guys,
So I have been trying to make ranger class decently tanky without sacrificing too much DPS. The best I manage to get 6K life + 100% spell supression + 90% evade + 50% phys reduction + 500 life per second + 400 life leach but my DPS was around 3 milion. And I was still squishy. I really feel like there is no reason to ever pick up ranger because other classes that can also go dexterity / evasion like have access to shield blocking so they can get away with using evasion which is the worst defensive layer in the game even ward is better because atleast you can make really strong once you have the Orloth ascendancy despite the fact that there are no ward nodes on passive skill tree. Like seriously what is the point of ranger with bow playstyle now that magic finding is pretty much no longer a thing anymore so the only thing that comes to my mind is 0 dmg fast running Heist builds? Is that it? Also the nerf to the spell supression did made ranger defense even worse. I would really love to see some rework on ranger side of passive skill tree to make it even worth starting that class. Last bumped on May 9, 2026, 9:55:25 PM

That could take multiple hits from nearly anything. I don't think we have the same definition of "squishy."
Do you feel you're "squishy" unless you can stand in the middle of a pack, letting them hit you for a few minutes while you run to the bathroom? |
|
" I mean it is extremely squishy in comparison to everything else that I have ever played so yes that is my definition of squishy. Also evasion is basically throwing dice and hoping you get the right number and if you dont well because you are ranger with no other defensive options beside spell supression that has been nerfed I quess you are dead. If you have played max shield block character with 1K+ health regen or shield regen with 20K+ armor going from that to this evasion meme non-sense feels awful. |

well max block, even 60% block > everything. Even armour stacker lacks in comparison to max block. I guess ranger is more about evade/avoid things by putting a lot of space between the character and the source of damage and being hard to hit by moving around fast and a lot, using mouse and fast reflexes. Also so low DPS doesnt help the hit and run tactics.
I like standard.

" I dont know what kind of atlas strat beside stongboxes would allow me to do the "hit and run" because my maps are packed and also I want to play ARPG and not a bullet hell / dodge ball. When I have tried to sacrifice "defense" for more DPS it was actually unplayable due to the fact that I am waiting for new PC and my current PC is dropping fps like crazy I am talking about going from 80 FPS to 2 FPS which makes this dodge ball tactic for ranger impossible. |

oh I get it. Well when I see some videos with those zoom zoom builds with lots of buffs and crazy crap I must admit that I am jealous of them, they farm fast currency and gold. But then I remember that they are click bait. If you also consider their cost , it is a solid no. The last 4 years I prefer clanky and/or slow builds that are somewhat immortal. I mean builds that can do any map mode and combination, any atlas tree, any eldritch pillar click any titanic scarab combination. Not dying is the best. All of those builds had at least 60% block, 90% resists, leech, x on hit as a start in defences and the list goes on. Some had only a few millions dps others could deliver more. For your situation and since you already kinda said that you enjoyed these kind of builds, I suggest you roll back to it.
Every build looks good in videos that got picked amongst 20 other failed attempts to showcase the build. But they disappoint, when someone tries to make the said build, and ends up to the realization that the only line of defence is regex-map-search and the 5 portals left in the hideout. To sum it up. I think you had your build just didnt realize it and switched to something else. Just for conversation though, to tell the truth, the last two years, I just play my delve build for mapping. I map 10 times slower than other builds, it is clanky, but I never die. I just use other gloves and potions that give item rarity just so I can cope with my dellusion and/or denial that it is a map build LMAO. 16k es over leech leech es es on hit mana leech mana on hit 60% attack/spell block es on block 10 grapsing vines(not applicable in maps though, only delve relevant) 3 end. charges immortal call lvl28 frost bubble lvl27 or something sigil of power lvl7 (not applicable on maps, delve relevant) immune to curses/elemental ailments 88% resistances immune chaos/poison 120% spell supression, 55% damage suppresed immune to stunts yeah but it gets frustrating some times, I feel you. It is slow af , it is melee I have to chase the monsters around :S. I really wish I was some kind or ranger with 200% movement speed and hitting whole screen from the corner. I like standard. " Chasing enemies? I think that you are mistaken POE 1 for POE 2 yeah POE 2 melee is literal garbage but in POE 1 I have never felt like I have to chase enemies. |

Oh yeah the build is melee, I have to chase monsters with my 30% or 35% movement speed LMAO. In delve I can just stand still and they rush onto me. Maps is a totaly different situation though. I mean... hmmm, english not my native langauge and I cannot express correctly. What I want to say is that every class and build is targeted towards different kind of things. Other are tanky and slow. Other are super fast and elegant but squishy. Others are glass cannons. Some are summoners. Some are just item rarity. Others are made for delve or valdo maps or super duper juiced content. One must find what he like to play as, what content he enjoys and focus into that. Others have more than 2 builds and depending their mood the pick one of those each day.
Other builds work perfectly at lvl 20 naked afk in hideout flipping currency/items and crafting (best build ever immo). I like standard. Last edited by Spacecom#5362 on May 9, 2026, 12:33:24 PM

" I have no idea what are you talking about? I was talking about that Ranger is lacking the defensive layers / options that other classes have acess too. If you love watching some youtube videos that have overinflated numbers in POB (just check configuration and look how many builds even from popular content creators have non-sense ticked in configuration part of POB for example full phys build having ticked in configuration that this build can chill / freeze, burn / ignite when there is no way of aplying those effects with that build). Also why would I ever want to go through mirror crafting a bow to deal similiar or even lover DPS than some spell caster / minion build / melee build with much better survivability? But hey if you love to throw mirrors on single build just to get one shotted by any trash mob you do you. This post is about Ranger feeling outdated due to lack of defensive options and not about you loving editied youtube videos with overinflated POBS. I am trying to compare things, so we can conclude that classes and builds are made for different things. It is hard (depending on budget and available items) to layer many defences on a ranger than , let's say, a juggernaut.
It is like comparing a delve build to a map farm build and cry that it doesnt have speed. And visa versa comparing a ranger build ment for farming gold fast to a delve build or a max block build and cry that it lacks defences. I like standard.
