FSR 2 -> FSR 4

Us AMD users are a minority, but this feature would be greatly appreciated.

From a development standpoint, is this going to be a lot of work?

A minority? not so sure about that.

The ecosystem of Sony PS5 and Xbox consoles uses RDNA2 SoCs, which are equivalent to the Radeon RX 6700 (PS5) / RX 6900 (PS5 PRO).

The world of home consoles is primarily driven by AMD technology for the graphics part.

For the PC world, according to the Steam charts, AMD graphics cards represent 18% of the Steam user base and NVIDIA represents 72% of that same user base.

In fact, AMD users and the technologies that come with it are not so minority after all.

Currently, the world of consoles is powered by RDNA2 SoCs, so FSR support is only available in its FSR2 version, unlike AMD GPUs for PC which have FSR3 (RDNA3 / RX7900) and FSR4 (RDNA4 / RX9700).

In facts:

Consoles:
-> RDNA2 (RX6000) only supports FSR2 at most.

PC:
-> RDNA3 (RX 7000) only supports FSR3 at most
-> RDNA4 (RX 9700) only supports FSR4 at most

The hardware ecosystem that makes up the AMD lineup is very fragmented and makes support complicated (time and development resources).

I imagine that when the next-generation consoles are able to support FSR4, things will evolve for support in PoE2.

For the moment, GGG has chosen to maintain only one FSR stack for all PC + Console hardware, and since current consoles can only support FSR2, PC players with more recent AMD hardware for graphics support are stuck on this version.

I completely understand the interest in this, especially in the context of a game that is in the early access stage. However, it would be good for GGG to reassess the situation as the official first release of the game approaches and dedicate a stack of FSR support for the PC world to offer FSR 3/4.
FSR2 remains a technology released in March 2022.

@GGG
Breaking the fourth wall:

Yes GGG ;-) A game in development is a story being written, and it's happening now. Don't come telling me stories that now belong to the Paleolithic era of PC upscaling technology, the FSR2. I already know, I was young :p

+1

AMD is goat for Linux.

Well actually you can use FSR even on Intel cards (I believe)
at least add FSR3 support

I would be very surprised if they tied fsr pipeline with new gen consoles. 0.4 received first performance fix. Sadly but nowadays upscalers are called optimisation part and optimisation is usually one of the last development processes.

So my guess it will happen no later than 1.0. Especially when there is so little known about new gen timelines. Just as about 1.0 release tbh xd

Implementation is fairly simple because all the temporal upscalers have kinda similar interfaces, inputs etc.. So you basically just need some smart wrapper to make polymorphic calls across vendors / versions. (which they probably already have)

Testing & support is a bigger issue though. Atm its a feature that can only be used by a very small minority of AMD users (unlike previous iterations it requires special hardware capabilities -> btw, Sony's PSSR also has different hardware so the entire thingy is very wonky) and I would actually expect AMD to provide more updates here. So it's a bit hard to justify higher priorities here I would guess.

On the positive side: keep in mind that a lot of AMD users skipped the 9XXX series because it was a mid range offer that didn't provide meaningful upgrades. So it could change with next release.

Personally I like NIS the most because it looks much better in my opinion and it requires less resources. (+ there are always other glitches with temporal upscalers that I find most distracting)

If you are curious on how the details work, just take a look at the Skyrim mods.

- First you had those payed mods that everybody uses to trash talk devs.

- Aside from being somewhat questionable, they also had major bugs. Like for example, they just wouldn't work when you engaged in dialogues or opened the inventory etc..

- About 2-3 years later you had a proper implementation with community shaders that didn't break all the time (they prioritized replacing the entire rendering pipeline first because it would allow for much bigger improvements for performance & new feature support -> like for example, fixing the limit on the number of lights or adding support for upscalers) (also is open source so you can look up all the details if you like :))

[edit]
oh and yeah, in my opinion it would be more helpful to replace the drop down of those performance presets with the resolutions that DXGI returns. That way a lot of users wouldn't have to bother with constant switches of display settings & you would get more control over fillrate performance.

Really hoping for FSR 4 to be announced tomorrow :3 fingers crossed!

You 're not alone ;-)

Current technologies (FSR4, FSRAA) + good performances and above all: no constant crashes.

The game's technical foundation remains the primary pillar of enjoyment, allowing us to fully appreciate the amazing content that awaits us.
Bumping this as things are moving with AMD.

With FSR4 being supported in more and more games, it coming to RDNA 3 this July, and RDNA 2 next year, if would be fantastic if POE 2 added it soon.
