Why are boss ranged attacks so superior to their melee attacks?

Isn’t the point of being ranged to avoid danger? Right now the danger is in the ranged distance. I find myself hugging bosses with my ranged characters to feel safer.
Ranged : huge linear slams
Melee : anemic slaps
For anyone not playing an instakill op build, the choice seems evident.

I have felt the same with my Plant Druid, earlier played with Monk (melee).

So, you're proving your own question there literally with your next sentence.
Been this way since day 1. Safest place is usually within melee range of the boss. I remember my first sorc dying a lot until this concept "clicked" with me and suddenly I felt OP.

Hum, what? Proving my own question?
It is a simple paradox. Ranged should be safer, that’s the point of ranged, but right now, it feels like it is not, and that’s my feedback.
Hope that clears things up.

No. You're saying Isn’t the point of being ranged to avoid danger? and you're literally avoiding danger by I find myself hugging bosses with my ranged characters to feel safer.

Funny, how you can't understand that. Nothing paradoxical about that.

Yes, I find myself going melee with my ranged char. Which means, in other words, I feel forced to be in melee, implying that there is a design problem. Ranged characters shouldn’t have to go in melee to feel safer, because range distance should inherently be safer, but somehow, right now, it doesn’t.

I mean, your build does more damage at range (or at least it should in theory), why shouldn't some bosses also?...

I like how the forums cant make up its mind.

"range is too strong"

And then in this thread

"Boss makes me go melee in some instances, range is too weak"
Mash the clean
MAYBE this is the case for few bosses but for most bosses ranged is king vs maps ranged is king
