Lightless Astrolabe and failing abysses in layouts that are poor for abyss monster spawns
|
Sometimes abyss pits put themselves into a places where it struggles to spawn monsters and you only get a trickle of them. This can cause the abyss to 'fail' because you weren't killing enough monsters. If you have an astrolabe and fail even a single abyss in a map it counts as failing the shaped region objective and you don't get the completion bonus.
This issue of abyss monster spawns has been an issue for a long time, but you can mitigate it by running maps that have as few small obstacles or walls as possible. However with the shaped regions, you are incentivized to run possibly bad layouts to try and juice up the good ones, or you use the keystone and can't control the collapse of your shaped region. Either way this effectively just means that some amount of maps in your shaped region are just going to be lost; either by the keystone, or by abyss 'fails' that are outside of your own control. Here's an example of a map where the abyss pits struggled to spawn monsters when they got stuck in a alcove and we eventually failed simply because it was only spawning a trickle of monsters Bug Report ID: #3,359,502,445 Last bumped on Mar 30, 2026, 5:40:58 PM

Ill take it even further, even if it was a perfect layout like dunes where there are no trees or corridors, sometimes it will still pick a corner of the map with a wall next to it and it will still fail. This happens less when you arent juicing maps with more pack size or number of abyss/magic monsters. I think the best temporary solution is to remove the fail condition entirely and only have a succeed condition that way if you do have multiple abysses the chances of one working is much higher than needing all 3-4 to work.
The best solution and probably unobtainable in short time frames is just making it so abyss can't go to places where it can't spawn enough monsters or make every abyss like mirage abysses where they dont move and just shoot out monsters until they're empty. |

Bump. This has been an issue with abyss for a long time. The introduction of lightless astrolabes should really increase the priority of fixing this. A staff response would be welcome.

I'm posting another reply right after my last one because this bug caused me to fail two shaped region objectives back to back. This is quite frustrating.

Bumping this because I just encountered the same problem on a bunch of consecutive maps. I'm fully invested in Abyss on the atlas passive tree and adding as many Abysses as I can to my maps. I have no problem clearing abysses as fast as they can spawn, but I still consistently "fail" at least one abyss per map due to the abysses getting stuck on scenery or failing to spawn mobs at a reasonable pace. Using a shockwave totem build means I'm popping packs as soon as they're targetable and still failing these encounters.

Thanks for the writeup, I was going to try abyss as a leveling strat but if the astrolabe bricks the atlas then I'll reroll breach until it's fixed.
What sort of mods are generated on the abyss astrolabe? Btw, abyss got addressed in 3.28.0c Hotfix 2 for mirage area. |

I thought to use abyss to work on the challenges, but so far of three maps, 2 have failed because of this. Abyss Astrolabes seem borderline unusable.

bump, i think its even worse with the scarab that lead to minor spires. long time issue. 1 useless astrolabe for now
