HC enjoyer here. There is nothing wrong with Unwavering Stance when mitigation is at proper levels and then setup and used correctly. It's one of the best keystones in POE, that's why it was removed in POE2.

POE is not a game where you hop in and because in fact you may indeed be a nerd, that you will simply succeed because it offers complexity.

The chosen skill is perfectly fine, same with the ascendancy. The issue is a coherent build that has synergy. I would recommend finding a smite build on POE ninja by looking at current or "Week X" builds or from credible build creators that are cheap or beginner friendly until you pick up the basics of scaling and build creation.

You are softcore, so I would respec into an energy blade smite inquisitor if you are dead set on smite.

Captain Lance is legit.

Ultimately, pick a league starting build to get a grasp of scaling, build mechanics and monster mechanics. You are not following anyone or giving up agency, you are learning the game.

Most of all, have fun. And take a break from time to time. The game isn't easy.
