It will turn out like Mark mentioned on the league reveal.
At first Mercs will be used as hybrid damage dealer and aura bots but as player & minion damage improves they will be mostly used as aura bots. If used as aura bots i expected them to be near invincible if geared more defensively and having the proper auras,skill gems + items for recovery & DR. Masterpiece of 3.16 lore "A mysterious figure appears out of nowhere, trying to escape from something you can't see. " I'm not sure you can use gems on your merc, I don't think you can set them up as aurabots, a friend of mine rand aurabot you couldn't be killed in uber boss fights, that would be insane. |

If you mean by that that players can't change the Mercs randomly created skill gem set thats likely true (from what was shown and the Q&A). But can they (mercs) use skill gems at all? Yes they can and this can be verified if watching the league reveal again. So even if players can't change the Mercs skill gems they will still provide somewhat useful auras or active skills at the beginning and later as we fight and hire more (hundreds) they will with some RNG be usable as aura bots (to some extent) or damage dealers. It's a matter of time really nothing else. More WHEN than IF. On top their gear can be changed on the fly constantly as we progress so they will be tanky or glass cannony as we make them. They already said that their HP will regen when out of combat and they will have damage reduction vs. bosses and their special attacks. The jewelry slots they have can literally make them immortal.
