Anyoneone who was interested in PoE 2 already tried it. Even if they didnt want to spend 30$, there was insane amount of free keys going around from people who got multiple of them for freee (like me).
PoE Two release wont beat previous peak numbers on steam. It wont get even close to that number. Tourists are already gone and wont be coming back and chinese bots will be on separate server that doesnt count towards Steam.

What's the point of this part of the statement? Numbers have always dropped some time after league start. Why is 1-2 weeks a relevant metric?

For most it isnt, but some group of people really likes to look at "retention" not starting numbers.
After 6 months, i dont even care anymore.
