Quite a bit of reasons why XP Death Penalty has got to go
In a perfectly balanced and bug free environment XP loss is not that bad of a motivator to stay alive.
However, because it's EA it's not going to be bug free and it feels really stupid to die to bugs or have maps not be able to be completed and lose a map node. The permanent punishment for developers failures feels beyond bad. They either need to disable these for the remainder of "early access" or if they are going to have these bugs throughout the entire life cycle, ditch them entirely. |

" im not gaslightning anyone. but you are. by including 'everyone' and 'we'. thats HOW the definition goes. i used 'the majority' and 'most' in all of my posts. it is not the same. the only reason, you would care about lose'n XP. is because you want the following: skill points. to obtain higher levels. to obtain max level. skill points > come from getting higher levels > until max level. so logically. if you complain about about xp penalty... you are complaining you cannot get max level. if you did not care about max level. or obtaining more skill points. you would not care about xp penalties. its really that simple. |

" The lvl number is irrelevant. One of my goals is to gain at least most of the skill points and the death penalty with no option to recover in combination with monster lvl capped at 81 makes every death above lvl 90 just piss me off and not want to bother wasting more time. It forces me to play overly cautious and just try and kill everything at the edge of the screen or use a broken meta build, both options make the game less engaging and boring. This is a seasonal ARPG game. It's flat out bad design to make the last 10 levels a complete slog then decide to add an overly punishing XP penalty with no option to recover. Even Elden Ring lets me recover lost runes. Even From Software understands punishments have a limit. Last edited by qQbonmjtAZ#7824 on Jun 2, 2025, 4:43:50 PM

" Nope nope nope and nope. Exp loss is outdated, and should be deleted/made optional. The fact remains, the majority of people want this. And a lot of players have quit because of it. So it's only a matter of time till there is some kind of change with exp, and I look very much forward to it. Just like the 1-portal change that people thought would never happen. |

" You don't know what most people want. If you want to look at actual numbers, most people who bought the game have stopped playing, even when the new season launched. |

" but... the lvl number is relevant. because the xp penalty is so minor until you hit like, lv 94/5. up until that RELEVANT number. you can get your xp back within 1/2 maps. its at 94/5 where it becomes exponentially punishing. and like i said. the VAST... and i mean VAST majority of builds are completely done at this point. and since the VAST majority of builds are complete at lv 95. you should not be die'n alot if you are done build wise, have the correct gear for your build, are running maps your build can run, and are paying the slightest attention to your screen while playing. if you are die'n alot at lv 95. your gear is not optimized. your build is not optimized. you are not running maps you can handle. or your skill is not up to par to be at this current level and progress further. 1 or all of these things. |

" its been stated over and over again in poe1/2 on forums, interviews, etc by dev's. that most of the playerbase doesnt hit endgame maps. so... the drop in player count has to do more with the campaign, than maps. logically. (or things like builds, skills, nerfs, etc. xp penalty is a endgame problem. that a huuuuuge portion of the playerbase... never gets to experience) (( i would wager, the vast majority of the people complaining about xp penalty... have never even gotten to the point of say... my first character this league, @ lv 98. where one death means i have to run another 20 maps to get back to where i was. that is where the real burn outs, crash outs, etc... start happening btw... around 97)) Last edited by Innuendos#5095 on Jun 2, 2025, 4:55:27 PM

" the only correct thing in this post, is that everyone wanted, (and expected, you are wrong on that) the 1 portal change. out of pure curiousity though.... can you explain to me this.. how are you going to make it optional and have a ladder? i would love to hear how you would do this... as a non dev. and i am sure they would too. i literally. hang on your every word for this.... one thing. " let me tell you something, ladder is outdated AS WELL!! nowadays most people dont have time to spend that much of a time to be the first in the ladder. Again ladder should be separate realm for basement nerds PLUS exp penalty of course |

" If you care so much about it then go and get rank 1 for your ascendancy in gauntlet and other race events in PoE 1, where its an actual achievement and you get prizes and sometimes demigod's mtx. But trying to push this fake "ladder" competitiveness onto every other player and using it as an excuse to keep a bad mechanic like exp loss in the game is just not ok. If they want their "race to X thing" so badly just make special event leagues where exp loss is enabled. The simplest solution is seperate server with exp loss on for the 0.0000001% that want it, and let everyone else have fun. Or make it optional, and if your exp loss is off then you won't show up on ladder. There's your solution. 99% of players won't care at all that their character doesn't show up on poe.ninja or ladder lmao |
