Cannot pick up any item SOLVED

I started a new character solo dawn of the hunt. I cannot pick up the starting spear. I skipped the tutorial to move forward and killed a few enemies and got a chest piece to drop. I cannot pick this up either. I remapped my pick up button to N. This doesn't allow me to pick up items either.
I started a new witch. Same set up. solo dawn of the hunt and WASD movement. Exact same issue. I can't pick up the starting wand.
Note Tried more button combos. had to hit Alt+right click
