Exalted Orb Rerolled My Item?? Trialmaster Decoration Related?

I just used an exalted orb while in my hideout on a nearly perfect ring, instead of adding a modifier, it rerolled the ring and bricked it... right when I used the orb the Trial Master said something along the lines of "Better luck next time". Is he designed to have some sort of influence on your currencies when you are crafting?

I should also note that I am 100% certain it was an exalted, and the trialmaster confirmed it since he keeps track, it was the first exalted orb I had used with him in my hideout and it showed I used 1.
