I just restarted steam again and now the patch is downloading - hopefully it's coming back up for everyone.

I don't know if you're serious but there are no problems regarding leveling and XP loss. PoE is a game about power and knowledge to obtain that power. Every singe passive skill point you get towards the the endgame from lvl 90 to 100 increases your power tremendously. That power has to be earned, or bought ( leveling services with in-game currency ofc). There are many relatively safe options in the game that grant increased XP gain if you pay attention to the league mechanics and their perks.
The only rage and frustrations you would feel stems from being a glass cannon expecting a easy ride to max level. You have to simply find solutions to overcome these obstacles. Many people don't reach max level because it's a feat of strength and knowledge of in-game mechanics.

I hope they never remove XP loss.

So Steam itself was the issue but a bunch of grown adults who can't go 15 minutes without playing a game get rabid and attack GGG that has nothing to do with the problem?

You know I'm not shocked at all.
