Why is standard not an option to create character?

What I find amusing about people like this --- wait you put all that effort in with the expectation that in 3 months or less it has no meaning? And in an environment where one can spend years and not find quite a number of items...?

And given the frequent complaints when leagues were still in regular rotation....

New player here, I started my first char in Standard last week as I wanted the closest experience to the original, but now of course I had to roll a second char for the event and I'm a bit torn :)
