POE2 crafting

A common argument supporting devs on the current "crafting" system is that "more advanced crafting will come in future leagues".

Some people also cite that POE1 crafting only became good after all the league features were added, otherwise initially it was shit as well. So POE2 crafting being shit right now is fine.

I find it strange that this reasoning even exists.

So are people (including the devs) fine with deliberately presenting a bad system, after having already done and know how to do a good system, then gradually improve on it, essentially just repeating the past 10 years of progression, even though everyone already know what the final good result looks like?

Am I the only one finding this weird? Devs know and have already implemented a good system in POE1, and it took them 10 years. So why are we getting the bad version of it, the 10-years-ago version of it?

Why isn't POE2's base, vanilla, starting crafting system, the good system they have perfected in POE1?

And why are people fine with this? Do people think that when the game launches, the first league will magically overhaul the whole crafting system and make it good? And if that's the case, why can't that overhaul just be what we start with, as the base crafting system?

You're starting with assumption that PoE1 crafting system is good. It's absolute dogshit. It's way too powerful and completely destroys value of all ground loot. PoE2 crafting system is already extremely strong and doesn't need any improvement. If anything it's already too strong because of omens and greater essences. Not only you can somewhat deterministically craft 2 mods on an item you can also somewwhat deterministically remove mods from item. I mostly see complaints about crafting from people who refuse to trade - and all I can say is the game is not made for that.

Out of curiosity, how much omens did you drop and how much are required on average to craft anything good ?
I absolutely hate the crafting in PoE1 and is one of the reasons I stopped playing it after 2500 hours. The current crafting system isn't perfect, but it's way better than PoE1
Thanks for the responses. It's interesting to hear about the negative side of POE1 crafting, because I never played POE1, but have heard so much praise for its crafting and endgame, things like "you can choose what you want to run in the endgame, if you want more bosses, you can" etc.

It gave me the impression that POE design is all about empowering player choice and letting players do what we like more, and don't have to engage with parts we don't like, without ever putting ourselves at a disadvantage.

But from what I see at the moment, there's really no choice anywhere. Everything is just RNG, and we just have to take what we get, and keep rolling the dice until we get what we want.

Still do hope there's more player agency in this game, though. And hopefully it wouldn't take 5 years before this game stops feeling like a glorified slot machine.

More than I should've had. Omens in my opinion shouldn't have existed in the first place. And you need 0 to craft good item. In PoE2 crafting is about improving your item, not creating something from scratch like PoE1. The thing about PoE2 crafting is you have to rely on item that drop - and that is a good thing because it gives ground loot value. In PoE1 ground loot has 0 value - crafted mods are stronger than anything that can drop and on top of that crafting allows combining mods that can't naturally appear together. PoE2 crafting is all about taking already good or potentially good item and making it better. Almost no crafting option (except for annuls/chaos/vaal) can make item worse - it can reduce its trade value or its potential but it can never make it worse. In PoE1 on the other hand most crafting methods are destructive but has way too many ways to fix something in place.s.
