Leagues are going to be tough with a game with such a slow and boring leveling process.
So my very first toon in PoE2 took me 16h to make it to maps (home brewn deadeye spark), that was without no preparation. Second char was ice strike monk and it was 9 hour 23 min run. Now lets compare it to PoE 1 where I usually make it to maps in 7-8 hours at league start, it is a game I have played for nearly 10 years.
If I'd have the same experience as I have in PoE 1 I'd imagine getting to maps in 7-8 hours also in fresh league. Wtf are everybody talking about it being long and boring?
As more gems and weapons get added, more and more viable ways to speed through campaign come up and we are right back at PoE 1 speed campaign wise.

I'm not sure what to make of it. It's like the devs purposely "snuck" in stuff they knew players wouldn't like, hoping the players would just ignore it. Well...players didn't.
Before anyone screams "Back in my day, D2, blah blah, just remember, this game is supposed to be casual friendly.
Flasks don't recharge automatically in town
One death in maps
XP Loss
low drop rates of everything
While this isn't sneaking in, bricking "Cast on" stuff
High respec costs
Sanctum and Ultimatum as the new Lab for ascendencies.
No movement skills, coupled with movespeed being stupid hard to get on boots
I cut my teeth on the 2600 and I played thousands of hours of EverQuest. I played brutally hard games. We put up with xp loss on death and other unfair mechanics because we didn't know any better and we didn't have a choice, I guarantee you that if XP loss wasn't there not a soul would complain that it needed to be brought in.
Just like in POE2. I guarantee you that if we had 6 portals in maps, no one would complain and say we need one porta, or if movement speed was easier to get, no one would complain about it, etc.

the only thing i disagree with is the sans D2 bit. im old enough to have played diablo 1 on release, i loved d2 back when it came out it was fantastic.
but that game is old as shit, i dont think d2 can even remotely compare to path of exile 1. as massively flawed as poe1 was at birth, as much as they fixed problems but added a ton more, i just dont think its possible for a game so small and limited like d2 to ever be able to compete with such a vast and magnificent game.
i know poe2 will be better than poe1 when its done. when it goes full launch it will be miles better than poe1 was on launch in 2013. im absolutely certain of it, and its just gonna get better from there.
theres massive issues right now, and were gonna get to that. we all know theres issues, i hope we can keep it constructive, nothing wrong with getting a bit emotional about it all us vets care deeply about the game. theres real frustrations. thing is the devs wont be happy either, they will be playing it, reading comments and saying yeah, i dont like how that is playing out either, its shite, lets change that.
i have total faith in these devs, poe1 has big issues, poe2 has big issues but i fundamentally disagree with people who think the devs are somehow lacking. this is a really hard thing to develop and balance, but they made poe1 which is at least 10x better than any other arpg ever made. this game WILL be better than poe1.
I love all you people on the forums, we can disagree but still be friends and respect each other :) Last edited by Snorkle_uk#0761 on Jan 6, 2025, 8:59:10 PM

I think where our views differ is how we're looking at it...
To use another analogy, when some people say Wilt Chamberlain is the best basketball player ever, they aren't comparing him from his era to the current era of players. They are comparing him to how much better than he was than his peers. He would be average at best if he was playing in today's era.
I use that same type of mentality when rating games. How great were they during their current time in history? Diablo II wasn't just revolutionary in many ways, it also checked many other boxes. Can PoE2 reach that type of status? I highly doubt it, but I do think it will be regarded as one of the best games of 2025 (if not THE best).

I'm gonna push back on using Wilt in this example. Wilt would dominate today's game. He was the most athletic big man ever, with a vertical jump of 48 inches. He once dislocated another player's shoulder by just cleanly blocking a dunk. But that's probably neither here nor there, but man, Wilt could play.

I agree Wilt was a fantastic player, but The Greek Freak would absolutely body him. 😉

I agree and disagree. If you play PoE 1 you know the game has gotten worse every league. Might be 3 bad leagues and they strike gold with a league but than 3 bad ones follow. You can feel the direction they want to take making PoE more hardcore and punishing.
PoE 2 has a good foundation but the direction is not one any player wants. They could make the game more fun and rewarding but they will end up nerfing everything into the ground including loot and make the game worse and worse.
First character in PoE 2 I had about 100x exalts and 1 divine dropped as I hit maps. Second character done this week and I had 3 exalts drop before maps.
That is how stingy the devs have already nuked the drops.
Funny you say that when devs were not working last 2 weeks. Also you are wrong that nobody wants more methodical gameplay. I would love if the game played like first 2 acts all the time. I dont want another walking simulator.
I have to agree with Kuciol here, if PoE2 just ends up going the direction of 1 and staying their I won't be nearly as impressed. I had so much fun struggling on my warrior but the second I found the galvanic shards build for clearing on Witch Hunter the game actually just turned into PoE1. I would love to see the devs bring everything into line and make the end game a more similar pace to the first play through (of acts 1-3) than continue pushing us closer and closer to a 'walking sim' aka PoE1.
I agree, the funnest part of the game for me so far is Act 1-3 on normal. After that builds start to go from tactical gameplay to screenclear combos. It's not the fresh new ARPG experience that the gameplay showcases sold me on and I would be said if the game got faster and lost all that innovation.
