Why do we punish children?

We punish them to get them to stop doing what they were doing.

In this case, apparently the devs want players to stop doing endgame content they are not 100% certain of clearing. This is bad game design for a lot of reasons.

Only doing content you know you can clear gets boring. Most players want to feel challenged. They like taking on content they can fail, because it makes the successes feel so much better.

Death is already a penalty - you lost all of the time it took for your attempt. Why add more on top of that? It doesn't make the game any more challenging, it just adds grind and resentment.

It shows you don't respect players time.

Nothing makes players quit a time faster than not feeling respected.
