The burning monolith boss, dozen of hours of Atlas grind to die after 20 second fight

And here's another bad design choice. I knew it was going to happen this way, but I had no other choice if I wanted to face the Burning Monolith boss.

I grinded for dozens of hours on the atlas to discover a citadel, taking the chance, impatient to finally be able to continue the quest, only to die at 5% of the boss and realize that I'd have to find a new citadel of the same type to have an another chance.

But I'm not giving up, and I'm preparing for the next citadels with a level 90 character and very decent stuff, enabling me to do the level 80 maps without a hitch. I finally manage to get the three fragments I need to enter the burning monolith arena.

But even before the fight started, I knew how it would end and what the consequences would be. So I try a new boss, cool, he starts by throwing me a mega fire beam, I'm used to it by now, I pull out my best dodge. Then a new phase follows where he throws millions of little fireballs at me, but it's still ok, I've already played some hellish shoot-em-up, I can handle it. Then comes the moment when I see huge waves of flames appearing, and I suspect I need to position myself in a precise spot, but it's the first time I've done the boss, the attack is totally unreadable, and what had to happen happened, I get one-shot with 76% fire resistance and 5800 energy shield (+2200 mana from Mind over Matter).

Lets do the math: 5800 Energy Shield + 2200 Mana = 8000 Hit Point with my build.
Fire damage reduced by 76% mean that to be able to one shot me, the attack must deal at least: 8000 / (100 - 76) * 100 = 33 3333. Interesting.

So there you have it, dozens of hours of Atlas grind to make a 20-second fight. And if I want to start again, of course I have to find the corresponding fragments in each citadel, again...

What I was supposed to do ? Looking at an internet guide to know the boss pattern and ruining my experience ? Having psychic power to read dev mind and know where I need to go ? Farm enough to get 35K energy shield and not get one-shot ?

At this point I don't need to explain why it's just bad, you just need to read my experience to understand how nonsensical it is.

trade for fragments, practice fight.
Yep, really not happy with how maps are being done. This "you die and map is over" is absolute crap. Not only for monoliths but even at the start of mapping. So many "on death" effects, trash that can one shot you, etc... and not only do you lose experience, but now you lose the map too? When you are just starting end game you aren't exactly getting many maps. What is the need to punish you by ending the map when you are also losing exp? The boss resets so it's not like you cheese it down. How are you supposed to learn when half the time you can't tell what killed you? I actually enjoyed figuring out the bosses in campaign, dying many times... only to get to maps and have this fucking garbage.

So I'm just skipping monoliths for now. GGG needs to change this "hardcore" shit in softcore.
for Realmgate/monolith content I do actually agree that the portal limitation is a "bad" thing. The boss should just reset fully and you should be able to use all those portals.

It is a stupid way to go around to punish the player for not knowing mechanics they cannot practice well due to limited availability.

It's the same experience as with Trialmaster and Sekhema last boss, it just proves and proves again that the 1 Portal design is bull.

Yep, this weird forced hardcore in softcore 1-portal bs is ruining the game for so many people.
Ultimatum would be fine if they removed the walking sim between the trials. wasting like 5-8 minutes total on just walking is an insult

I think the biggest problem is the one portal, one life in the maps. I see a lot of people cheesing the game by logging out of the fight when they get low hp and just using another portal and continuing the fight, which is complete trash. I really hope they will change it and make is like poe 1 style, where you can use all the portals. Finding a citadel is a miracle on its own, practising the fights is pretty much not possible since the fragments/ keys are so expensive because of how hard they are to acquire.
This is poe2 design at its core. It's a full stop dead end game. Truly sad.
It’ll get better with time but to be honest to have some piece of endgame isn’t bad on a Beta. I think right now the campaign is in a better spot more than end game it seems.

Hoping they do rework a bit of the end game maps and just that one and done type of system. Losing all that time on something feels awful. I’m on level 11-12 maps and haven’t even seen a burning monolith yet. Maybe I’m just going through wrong way.
