Dodge Roll Removed.

Hey all

Just throwing my two cents in worth.

The dodge roll introduced in Path of Exile 2 does not feel natural or suited to the game. Corralling players into a forced play style is always bad. Especially if it is needed to progress. Wasn't in PoE 1. Needn't be in PoE 2.

Just Saying.

Cheers!

I am not a big fan of the dodge roll, no idea why every game needs to have it now.

I don't mind the idea of it but the way they implemented it is awful. The entire game is balanced around hitting space bar and if you don't hit space bar at just the right time, you die. I don't mind it as a sort of second class utility move that you push when you're a bit under geared or you need to dodge some big 1 shot AOE move but as it is now, you have to hit it every other input and that is just really bad.
It's terrible and doesn't allow for timing Boss fights to shoot a bow and move. I can't fight the Ogham boss because if I dodge I can't move far enough away to shoot bow and nove in time for the next attack at me?

The dodge has a slow time effect of ending the roll and recovery to move again then shoot. It's absolutely ruining the game for me and nothing to do with my reactions and everything to do with the boss mechanism vs character movements early game.

By no means am I an expert or professional player but I've played ever ARP game out their and been playing pc games sinc the 80's
I actually really like the roll. I think the trick is figuring out when to roll and when to just keep moving. Once I stopped spamming roll at the slightest boss twitch, it all clicked.

PoE 2 is designed around Dodge and Block. You are supposed to use Raise shield, have high natural block and dodge what you cant' block. Obviously PoE 2 is a very different type of ARPG to distinguish itself in the genre.

It's not hard to use. And it honestly makes fights way easier because the game is balanced around it. Like as I was playing I almost never got hit by a boss, they were trivial because of roll. And like you say, it's about using it when it's needed, not spamming it.

That said, unlike you, I effing hate it. I never liked rolling in souls games, I don't like rolling in games like this. I always roll magic characters because I like spamming meteors and teleporting around. I know the whole POE franchise is kinda built around all the classes having access to all the skills, and they wanted to limit movement skills in POE2 - so overall that just feels really bad to me.

I was gonna go Chronomancer so I had access to temporal rift. I love that kind of stuff. But there's so many things in this game that feel bad to me, I stopped playing before hitting my ascendency. I'm hoping they make the controls better at some point, because that's another major turn-off for me. But I digress.

+1 for ditching roll even tho I'm sure they won't.

And yet movement skills exist in PoE1 and are used for a similar purpose, so it's plenty natural.

The problem with dodge roll isn't that it's there, it's that game mechanics and monsters mean that often it's almost pointless to even do, either not enough distance or hit's landing regardless

I wouldn't hate it if they locked a lot of cool moves behind ascendancies like what they are doing with Chronomancer. You get access to temporal rift, time freeze, and time snap, but only if you roll sorceress and ascend as a chronomancer.

It would be cool if every ascendency got access to 2 or 3 extra skills. And if every ascendancy had 1 S-Tier skill, that'd be sick. Like one of the sorceress ascendancies should have frostblink. Other ascendancies could have an S-Tier fighting skill, or an S-Tier defensive skill.

I never played an ARPG to block or dodge. I play them to be a magic wielding character who can either teleport out of the way of a move, or absorb it with my energy shield. If I don't have the agency to do that, then I think this game really fails at being an ARPG, and is closer to an isometric attempt at a souls game.

EDIT: And honestly, it would be super cool if a frostblink ascendancy point wasn't even a skill, but instead just completely replaced your roll. So you can use the same button and not look like a tool while avoiding a boss's attack as a magic character. It would complete quicker than a roll, not have the slow getting up off the ground frames, and allow you to keep casting more quickly. A total upgrade like an ascendancy point should be.
