Tbh, chronomancer can be good (time freeze, apply contagion, push ED - enjoy the screen clear). With recoup, it can be pretty bonkers in terms of surviveability as well. The pathing would be 4-3-7-8 (the numbers correspond to the forum reveal).

Gemling is also a great choice, as you can go something like 1-2-4-5 which will result in +10% gem quality (if ED qual stays the same, then its 5% more damage iirc), +1 all skill levels (as You have mentioned above, pretty nice for spells), and 4+5 will "just" give the ability to buff ED + something like hexblast with the same support gems, which can be pretty huge in terms of damage). That is probably one of the best "stat-stick" ascendancies alongside Bloodmage, especially for casters.
