I already have a day and a half played on my character and I am not too keen on leveling a new one just for a new ascendancy but I might have to if they don't change this. ;(

I dont like there being no way at all to change ascendancies in PoE2 as ascendancies are a big part of the process of crafting your character. Trying out different skill-gem combinations will always be limited by which ascendancy you went for which feels bad in my opinion.
I still think it would make sense to give the choice of ascendancy a little more weight than in PoE1 though.
So some examples for a fix for that could be:
1) There is repeatable sidequest given by a witch, living far in the woods in a hut. After helping her with a personal task (e.g. killing a beast and gathering its glands), she offers a recipe for a mind-altering mixture that can disconnect your mind from your past experiences, which you need to find the ingredients for. Once you do, she will brew the mixture for you which you can ingest. Upon ingesting it will reduce your character level by 1 (metaphor for giving up your mastery of certain skills) but reset your ascendancy. You can repeat the part of finding the ingredients and brewing the mixture.
It will soft-lock you into one ascendancy at higher levels while allowing for experimentation at lower levels, as losing a character level will be far more painful later on.
To prevent abuse, the quest will be completable once per day.
2) The respec quest could also be themed around meeting representatives of the act-related cultures respective gods and asking them for a different path to ascendancy/change of the past in exchange for another trial.
3) Another idea I had just now is to give an ever increasing cost to respecing the ascendancy every time you earn another set of 2 points, with the 7th and 8th point fully locking the ascendancy, making it unchangeable. That way players could experiment at least until reaching early endgame.
in short: make respecing ascendancies cost alot more (in terms of progression/time investment) but make it available again
Thanks for hearing me out GGG, you are amazing at what you do
Can't wait for EA

over clicked and now I'm stuck with the totem ascendancy! with basically no gold to respec my character into something i don't want. I can either farm low level gear until i sell enough to respec twice or be blessed enough to find low level gear with some dex on it so i can swap it out. and then respec. talk about an absolutely fun destroying feature.

i've also spent time reasoning with myself if i should start over or stop playing a class entirely, cos of not being able to change into something that might be more prefereable to my playstyle.
Making this respeccable is only logical and great outlook for players who want to try the opportunities that the class presents.
Im not saying making it cheap to respec, but make it possible! Thank you GGG for making an astounding game.

I'm in act III new game plus and I absolutely agree. I wanna change my build to try something different and go Deadeye, but I'm stuck with pathfinder for the rest of the days. There is no way that's gonna motivate me to play the campaign again with the same class. It's unnecessary quality of life debuff for no reason.
