Returning/new player...

Hey!

It's been almost 6 years since I played this game (my first and probably last league was Delve*), after feeling burnt out from Diablo 4 I decided to come back but found out there's a lot of stuff to learn/re-learn...

Are there any guides out there for this current season? And what would be the most viable build for a beginner?

Thanks in advice!

Not sure if viable for ubers (probably not) but good as a starter up to (normal) Searing Exarch,Eater of Worlds:

From my SSF experience as league starters you can try SRS (Summom Raging Spirits) , Freezing Pulse totems, Frost Blades. Both FP totems + Frost Blades i would go crit for max freeze on enemies as an additional layer of defense.

my number one advice is "temper your expectations".

what do you expect to achieve.

what do you consider fun?

if you dont mind following build guides, POE can be tons of fun.

if you dont have much time to spend then POE might be less fun as you might not be able to farm up what you need.

if you like to make your own builds, then you can expect to not be able to clear all content unless your build is very efficient.

and as someone pointed out. avoid melee. to be specific, avoid melee combat which involves taking your stick and physically bonking an enemy with it. you may have a worse experience compared to if you went with anything else.

This is the real question.

If you haven't played since Delve, set obtainable goals for yourself.

First off, you have many leagues to play and discover which you enjoy in terms of farming: Delve, Betrayal, Heist, Harvest, Essence, Breach, Ultimatum, Sanctum, Ritual, Delirium, Blight, Expedition... Labyrinth? There's a lot to check out. Each have their own merits so it comes down to what you personally like.

Second would be bosses. Elder, Shaper, Sirus, Eater of Worlds and Searing Exarch can be done relatively easily (same for Atziri, but I don't think anyone 'farms' her). Maven and her invitations are a bit tougher... followed by uber bosses.

It really depends on whether or not you follow a build guide and how well you can follow that guide (I see many players follow a guide but struggle to reach the strength of the build showcased).

If you've never killed an end-game boss, just the first tier of bosses like Elder/Shaper/Eater/Searing should be your goal. If your build is doing that content well, you should expand your goals to obtaining all four Voidstones so that your entire Atlas is Tier 16 maps.

Bosses can take time to farm up and run. Learning the attack patterns is a big part of determining if a boss is 'easy' or not. It's easier to learn boss encounters if your build has DPS uptime WHILE you run around like a chicken; builds like totems, brands or minions--This is why people will tell you not to play melee and until you can anticipate and avoid attack patterns, I would agree.

One thing I will say; You're going to see a lot of people posting on YouTube or Reddit about their build that can crush all the content in the game or farm themselves 40 Divines an hour... That has nothing to do with the game YOU will be playing. Don't measure your experience to theirs and don't aspire to reach that level of gameplay--Those builds often require more currency then you'll farm up and even the farming strats require an upfront investment that you can't even afford.
Yeah, while I'm playing a build right now that is both weapon-damage-dependent and melee, I think that it's made a lot easier by not only have a very large area of effect with supported Earthquake, but also, in dire situations, being able to "run around like a chicken" waiting for enemies to bleed out !
(I still had to 'cheat' with a totem against Act 10 Avarius, he's IMHO plain unfair to melee !)

----

If you don't have a lot of time, sounds more like you should ignore challenge leagues after the first one, be sure to play a build that is not dependent on a seasonal mechanic that would go away later (easy for the current one ?), and then just play Standard leagues after that ?
