You can technically trade without premium tabs, its just nightmarishly difficult and basically reliant on people actually browsing the trade subforum, however actually participating in the economy without at least a currency tab is basically impossible simply because you cannot store enough of the currency to do anything with it. I would know, I tried to not buy any stash tabs my first league and I was nearly stuck in SSF except technically trade league because my only source of income was the chaos orb recipe and accumulating more than a few dozen of a given currency meant that I had no room for anything else and this is a game where you can and will burn thousands of most currencies making good items.
