So like, why are we stuck playing the same leveling through acts?

I've never felt stuck or forced to play certain skills or builds. Sure, I've tried some of the more popular efficient ones, but found a lot of them either too clunky or just not fun to play and haven't played them since. A lot of this falls down to personal preference.

As far as league starters, I'll usually try a skill I haven't played yet or one that I've liked before and haven't played in a long time. I aim to unlock my atlas, get most of my atlas tree points and farm some currency for another build. It more often than not works out for me, but I'm also not trying to get everything done in a week or two.

I've never been able to relate to people complaining about the choices they make like they're not the ones responsible for them. Playing the same skills over and over and then getting bored with them seems like something easily preventable, at least to me.
Ahhh, didn't think about that. I'll take a step back, most guides that I've followed all recommend Rolling magma for efficiency.

Appreciate all the input everyone!

Love yall.

For now the best starting skill for casters (since melee deadge) is Rolling Magma... and it feels so bad but for efficiency you have to suck it up.

Never heard anyone saying its good "league starter" in last few years.

Because it blows to play.

Purifying flame is much more satisfying if you want an easy fire spell.

You just listen to what streamer xyz says and recommends as only viable "league starter" while you could literally pick whatever you like and still crush the campaign and even the entire content of the game just fine. Probably slower with some skills? Yes, but I mean league lasts 4 months anyways and you play a arpg to slay monsters and not to do market trading pvp asap, so it doesn't matter if you reach "endgame" day 2 on a meta league starter or day 3-4 on a non meta league starter.

Yes

I get an idea for a character (thematic like let's say a Hades emissary or sth, not mine throw - sword blow aura - double colon stun on death), then again, thematically choose skills, and then try to make it efficient. Also, since it's often hardcore ruthless SSF, you have to think and build more on the fly rather than, hey in 16 hours time I'll have fun when my thing starts coming together.
It's crazy GGG has gotten away with forcing players to play this campaign 4 times a year for over a decade.
Not even Blizzard could get away with that!

On top of that, a lot of skills are not playable early on which feels bad(as this OP is saying).

Because GGG thinks buffing just numbers on underused skills is not cool so the only way they will ever buff them is by reworking them.

They should just replace and remove them then. TBH some people actually started to used old skill gems though in the last few patches. So people will play them if they fix them a bit.

And some people believe in Santa.

We've seen time after time that a lot of skills become popular by just buffing the numbers. It goes without saying. The only reason why they don't just buff the numbers, is because of all the moving parts in the game, with an additive and multiplicative mess of a system. They are afraid of creating a beast, as we saw last league and in Crucible.

I understand them. It's just boring as hell when the same few gems are at the center every league, especially while progressing.
Sometimes, just sometimes, you should really consider adapting to the world, instead of demanding that the world adapts to you.

Most people dont care. IF they will make Glacial Hammer broken af because they tweaked number too much it still will be better situation than same 5 skills being "top" for last 5 years.
But, sadly, GGG have diffrent "vision".
