Does Anyone DW Anymore or are Shields the Standard Now?

It's just far too easy to get deleted from off screen by packs of enemies that shoot you before you can even think about being in melee range.
Yes dual wield can be done, but it's typically a massive disadvantage with virtually no upside and will get you dead pretty quick.
This is why I play bow builds.
Ranged is safe-ish.
I was thinking of just picking up 2x Wasp Nest sometime for CL and calling it a day as I don't know much about claw crafting.
Now it seems like I need to learn shield crafting too, at the very minimum.
What are some of the strongest shield mods that make up for the offensive benefits of DW?
I know shields have more block than the 15% you get with DW.
Not sure if shields can roll attack speed mods at all.
Also, on a sidepoint, if you're using a shield, doesn't that mean you have to invest more points into shield nodes on the tree in addition to your choice of melee wheel?
You don't really need to invest in shield passives unless you're looking to get decent block chance. There's many unique shields people use because of their utility like the below because of its utility. Usually at max Endurance/Frenzy/power charges and getting enormous dps buffs just by holding warcry button.
If you're looking to get 75/75 though, you absolutely will have to invest. There's also Aegis Arora, with lvl 23 purity of ice and Melding, you can have 85% Max Ele res, and unbelievable sustain from very few items. Take it to 90% all ele res without too much difficulty and if you then get decent armour and 75/50, you can invest almost everything into dps.
I'm struggling to come up with new goals to keep me playing this game.

On topic: Dual wielding melee weapons is more or less dead. It used to be very popular a few years ago, but they double nerfed it; it used to have a 20% MORE damage multiplier, and you used to be able to wield a so-called "stat stick", boosting your damage by a lot. When they removed those two, and a while after buffed the hell out of shields, dual wielding became bad, and has been bad ever since.
sadge, didn't know that. Since I don't know a lot of other things, is there a mechanical reason they never addressed it since? Or just laziness "designed by true experts", as some other people relate to GGG in other threads?
Really wish I didn't have to use shields only if going for serious defenses without manual dodge.
Dualwield for melee only makes sense if you use the savior. It's essentially balanced around that weapon. Getting relevant block with DW is hopelessly impractical so if you want block as a defensive measure you are better off going with a shield and if you want to push damage then 2 handers are ways above dual wield. DW is supposed to be a middle ground but as so often with middle grounds, it just ends up being bad at both. It's not that you can't go dual wield with normal weapons but there is no point in doing so.

What about a skill like Cobra Lash?
It's ranged but I guess it's still in the 'melee class' of skills? DW as CL would still alternate weapons, right? If so I'm assuming no point to DW over using a shield.
Stacking poisons is important with increased atk speed so not sure what a shield would do much better in that regards for DPS?

How does savior benefit from DW? You won't get more summons from 2 swords

Yes, CL works just like a melee skill in regards to DW. You can use it for the 10% attack speed if you like and yes it makes it easier to stack poison but when comparing that to the defensive perks a shield can give then it's just not considered to be worth it by most people. You can just go and try it for yourself and see which feels better. Respeccing from DW to shield isn't that expensive unless you go hard on DW/shield block.

I obviously meant using whatever melee weapon you like (Paradoxica typcially) along with savior for 100% more damage via clones. I wasn't talking about dual wielding 2x savior. You can go savior + shield as well i guess but savior has pretty bad base damage stats so the sword is typically used in DW setups with another weapon.

I noticed for claw mastery there is something that gives double the attack value of inherent DW bonus. That seems pretty good but yes, shields seems much more tankier.
Why care what others are playing? I play fast striking 2h sword build. Once I finally complete it (after years) I will go to a dual weapon build. 2h with no block can be tanky so I assume dual can be tanky as well.
Standard lets you play what is fun rather than current meta.
I'm actually dual wielding now in the new league, but it's a caster. However, I know there is a fairly popular Boneshatter version that uses 2x Nebulochs. Dual wielding isn't popular in general, but there are always some exceptions :)
