Do people like Sanctum because of the gameplay itself? Or just the loot?

I never really got far into sanctum, but my first impression of it was that it departed too much from the core gameplay for my taste.

Should I give it another shot? Am I missing something? I don't care about the loot. I'd rather run maps and get half the loot if maps are more fun.

Its loot isnt all that insane as long as you havent made a dedicated character for it. And if u dont enjoy it, just stay away. Only reason to try again would be to check if u like it more by really diving into it. That happened for me with Harvest and Delve for example.
Sanctum is fun with any build if done correctly, after you've learned the rooms in and out and run about 50-60 of them all of a sudden you want to beat your previous timer.

Also you do get a lot of divines in there, and can get a mirror.
its relatively safe content that provides decent rewards for its risk and has a heavy bias towards a few mechanical skills than how strong your character is.

Basically its great for HC :p I enjoy it for both the gameplay and the loot - it could be better and some of the background nuisances of PoE clash with the design principles of a roguelite but on the whole I view it was a great addition.

I get the its not as fun as mapping view but I think its important for them to cater to multiple gameplay types when they can. I personally get tired of mapping very quickly once I start juicing maps - too time consuming, too much looting, downtime trading etc I honestly prefer blasting blue maps rapidly.
For me personally, it's just about the rewards. Somehow a mechanic where you have to avoid getting hit as much as possible doesn't really fit into my perception of an ARPG.

Though I see why people could like it. For example, my brother really likes roguelikes, so he's pretty crazy about Sanctum and loves playing it just for fun even though he can't kill Lycia half of the runs.

I understand, 90% of PoE players like to zoom and oneshot everything we get it.

Sanctum is not for everyone, perhaps you could give it a try with melee build and do some actual mechanics ingame. :)
Personally I'm playing it more for variety than for the gameplay, I like to try all the different mechanics in the game and learn them. Also for the loot; tastes vary considerably of course. Sanctum gameplay is somewhat different than normal, so it makes sense that some people happen to like that gameplay style and some don't.

Lootwise, I also have some interest in it because it can be a decent way to get div/ex if you're not a good player but have a build that works ok for sanctum. More generally speaking the loot from sanctum seems very very currency-focused.

I find the gameplay reasonably enjoyable, but it does get a bit repetitive at times. On the bright side it tends to be pretty fast; and there's some actual thinking involved with route planning and what risks to take. I find few other mechanics involve much of any real thinking. Though there's also the question of whether it's worth spending time thinking compared to just running through stuff faster (eg sometimes with expedition i'ts better to just power through whatever it is, and/or only do expeditions that you're so overpowered compared to that it doesn' trelaly matter what mods they have).

at some point you just obliterate everything.

I haven't done it a single time so far. After Ghazzy said he had to grind the mechanic for hours to get caught up I refused to do it. I'm not wasting my time for hours. I think it was something like 2-3 weeks in they supposedly buffed the rewards, but by that time... Well again, I was not going to spend hours of my time grinding pointless battles just to get high enough to where some rewards were finally decent.

Make a double strike character and delete everyone in 1 hit. Can't get hit if they die before they can hit you.
