[3.18] ShakCentral's Righteous Fire Trapper Inquisitor For Everyone

Welcome everyone! This guide covers the overview, leveling, and endgame concepts for playing a Righteous Fire + Fire Trap Inquisitor, including a Path of Building import for reference and advanced information. This is the third build in a seven-part series (details in the Introduction below) titled Class Builds For Everyone.

I recommend reading the entire guide, but you can reference the Contents for navigation or use the Intro links to join our Discord and Twitch communities. Thanks for reading!

Current Guide Version (See Changelog in "Contents"): 0.1

Please Note that this guide is a work-in-progress, especially the non-leveling sections of the PoB. I'm working hard on this as well as the other builds in the project, and it will be updated ASAP. Thanks!

Getting The Most Out Of This Guide

Regardless of your PoE experience, I recommend reading this guide entirely to understand the build's core concepts before importing the Path of Building.

This guide covers the basics to give you a strong knowledge base. Once you've read it, import the PoB. It has leveling and endgame skill trees, labeled gem links, multiple item sets, and a detailed Notes section that expands on many of the concepts discussed here.

Changelog

The preview (above "Introduction") displays the current guide version. The most recent forum Changelog is in the spoiler below; same-version PoB changes are listed in the PoB Notes.

About the Author

I've played PoE since open beta in 2013; I played off-and-on for years, but almost exclusively since 2018. I love helping new players get into the game as smoothly as possible.

I enjoy casters and fondly remember endless Dried Lake farming with pre-nerf Vaal Spark.

Class Builds For Everyone

I'm working on a build guide series that will provide a proven, powerful build for each of the game's classes. The guides are focused on helping newer players, but all seven have been tested and are capable of defeating a wide range of endgame bosses and mapping content.

My goal is for each build to be simple to understand, smooth to progress, and powerful to play. Upcoming guides will be listed below, and you can use the links to join me live for the creation process!

🔥 The Trade Site lets you trade almost anything in PoE, whether items or currency.

Main Build Mechanics

Fire/Burning Damage: Righteous Fire deals Fire Damage to both yourself and enemies around you. This damage scales from your Life and Energy Shield, so increasing your Life/ES totals both increases your survivability and your damage at the same time. Burning Damage and Fire Damage over Time are synonymous; both Righteous Fire and Fire Trap are used to deal high amounts of Fire Damage over Time.

Note: RF turns off if you reach 1 Life. It can’t actually kill you.
Note 2: Don't use flasks with a suffix that removes Burning. This will turn off RF instantly.

Damage over Time: DoT builds have high "DPS uptime". They often deal damage while moving, making them especially effective at surviving tough situations.

Maximum Resistance Stacking: Righteous Fire deals high self-damage, so you must have ways to deal with this. The first way is by increasing our maximum resistances beyond the 75% cap. This is done mainly through Notable passive skills and Shield modifiers, with the Melding of the Flesh jewel granting an optional method for increasing all max resistances to high levels.

Life and ES Regeneration: The second main method for negating RF’s self-damage is through very high regeneration. Because of Inquisitor’s Sanctuary and Pious Path ascendancy passives, it becomes much easier to sustain Righteous Fire
after completing Cruel Labyrinth around Act 8.

Armour: Armour mitigates physical damage from hits, solving an important defensive need.

Passive Masteries

Passive Masteries are a new type of skill point introduced in patch 3.16. Masteries provide niche build benefits in locations across the passive skill tree.

To select a Mastery skill, you must first allocate a Notable skill in the same cluster. In the Path of Building passive trees, take note of any allocated Masteries as these provide many important benefits. Masteries can be visually identified by the bright circles in the center of skill point clusters.

Keystone Passives

Keystones are skills on the passive skill tree. Most keystones alter a game mechanic and have both a benefit and downside. We use the following Keystones:

Call to Arms: We use 1 Warcry, so Call to Arms gives us the benefit of passively using it on left click at instant speed. Until/unless you have Legacy of Fury you’ll use Infernal Cry, and after Legacy you can either use Infernal or Enduring Cry.

Glancing Blows (Situational): GB doubles your block chance but causes you to take some blocked damage. This is playable only in combination with "on block" recovery effects, so you’ll either need an Aegis Aurora or an influenced shield with a % recovery modifier.

Divine Shield: This keystone grants ES Regeneration based on the hit damage prevented by your Armour, but requires Armour stacking to avoid its downside.

Unwavering Stance: This keystone grants stun immunity at the cost of being unable to evade. Since we only stack Armour and ES, the downside is negated while providing a large benefit.

Class and Ascendancy, Progression, and Playstyle

Class and Ascendancy: The Templar is a versatile class in the Armour and ES portion of the skill tree. The Inquisitor has an incredibly high amount of regeneration, making it a perfect ascendancy choice for Righteous Fire.

Progression: We level as either Wintertide Brand or Armageddon Brand + Fire Trap until Cruel Lab, when we can sustain RF and begin to complement single-target damage with Fire Trap.

In the endgame we'll acquire appropriate equipment (See Build Mechanics above and Endgame below) and focus on defensive layers, since our damage also scales with Life and ES.

Playstyle: Righteous Fire is used for clearing maps, with a fast Shield Charge enabling quick and smooth clearing. Clear is aided by Infernal Cry’s Combust explosions until you can acquire Legacy of Fury boots from the Maven.

For bosses RF allows you to often facetank while spamming Fire Trap to greatly increase your single target.

Scaling Damage and Defenses

Below are some simple ways to scale the build's damage and defenses. This is not a complete or thorough list; it's a broad overview to assist in decisions for item crafting/trading.

Damage : Here are some of the simplest ways in which you can scale up the build's damage:

🔥 Skill Gem levels
🔥 Increased Life and Energy Shield
🔥 Spell damage
🔥 Fire Damage
🔥 Fire Damage over Time Multiplier
🔥 Damage over Time
🔥 Damage over Time Multiplier
🔥 Burning Damage
🔥 Area of Effect

Defense : Here are some of the simplest ways in which you can scale up the build's defenses:

🔥 Life
🔥 Life/ES Recovery on Block and/or Kill
🔥 Life/ES Regeneration
🔥 +% Maximum Elemental Resistance(s)
🔥 Chaos Resistance
🔥 Elemental Flasks (Ruby / Sapphire / Topaz)
🔥 Armour
🔥 Block Chance
🔥 Ailment Immunity (Ignite, Shock, Poison, Bleed, etc)
🔥 Higher Damage

Mistakes To Avoid : Here are some commonly misunderstood modifiers or skill gem aspects that don't actually scale an RF build:

🔥 "Adds # to # Fire Damage" or “Fire Damage to Spells”
🔥 Scaling Ignite (Burning =/= Ignite. We scale Burning/Fire DoT)
🔥 Ailment Damage or Increased Effect of Damaging Ailments
🔥 Damage / Fire Damage with Hits (Scales Fire Trap but poorly)

Leveling

Spoiler

Forum Guide Covers: Leveling Preview | League-Starting vs Mid-League Leveling

Path of Building Covers: Vendor Recipes | Gems & Links | Leveling Uniques and Starter Mapping Trade Links

Leveling Preview

In Act 1 you’ll use Holy Flame Totem and add Wintertide Brand at level 12. You’ll use Wintertide until 28, where you can swap into Armageddon Brand and then supplement with Fire Trap at 31. Once Cruel Lab is complete and you have Sanctuary and Pious Path, you can sustain RF and transition into the full build.

Note that the PoB Notes contain details on how to obtain and level with Fire Trap from level 12 if you’d prefer.

League-Starting vs Mid-League Leveling

As mentioned above, the biggest difference between league starting vs mid-league leveling is the availability of Fire Trap. Templar doesn’t normally have access until Library at lvl 31, so if you have another character you can buy Fire Trap from Lilly Roth in your hideout. There are no mandatory leveling uniques for the build, and it scales with gem levels for a tested and smooth league start.

If you have existing currency or items, there are several uniques that make the leveling process even better. These include Lifesprig, Tabula Rasa, Wanderlust, Goldrim, Bated Breath, and Lochtonial Caress.

In addition, items with high recovery such as Kikazaru, Springleaf, and Shaper’s Seed can theoretically allow you to play RF as early as level 16, but it will require capped Fire resistance and a lot of flask management.

Righteous Fire Checklist

To start using RF, you'll need AT LEAST the following tasks/checks complete:

🔥 Normal and Cruel Labs, allocating Sanctuary and Pious Path.
🔥 Notable passives: Hearty, Barbarism, Soul of Steel & Prismatic Skin (& +1 max Fire res).
🔥 "10% less Damage Taken from DoT" Mastery from Acrimony wheel.
🔥 Vitality + Purity of Fire. For mana issues, turn off Determination or Clarity.
🔥 Soul of Arakaali major Pantheon (10% reduced DoT taken)
🔥 Optional: Shield with "+x max Fire Resistance".

🔥 BEFORE MAKING ANY LARGE-SCALE CHANGES GO TO YOUR HIDEOUT AND TURN ON RF TO MAKE SURE YOU'RE SUSTAINING

Endgame

Ascendancy Points, Bandit Reward, and Pantheon Choices

Spoiler
Ascendancy Points

Lab 1: Sanctuary. This gives us more damage to enemies in close range, but most importantly gets us halfway to RF sustain because we’re now on Consecrated Ground when stationary. Note that this is not conditional or cooldown-gated. As soon as you’re stationary, you have Consecrated Ground.

Lab 2: Pious Path. Time to play RF! This node is INSANE. It doubles your regen by applying it to ES as well, but the last line is the most important. Every time you’re stationary you have 4 seconds of Consecrated Ground (with +50% effect). Every time you Shield Charge or stop to cast a skill you get a new 4 seconds.

Note that the increased Consecrated Ground effect applies to both the Life Regeneration and reduced Curse effect. This is important in the Pantheon section below.

Lab 3: Augury of Penitence. It's a straight up boost to both damage and defense, as we’ll almost always be in close range of enemies.

Lab 4: Righteous Providence. The crit is not really helpful since we’re not scaling hit damage and Righteous Fire doesn’t hit at all. Think of this node as 2 free and powerful suffix mods. You’d be very happy with 50 Str and/or Int on an item; think of this in the same way.

Bandit Reward

Kill all Bandits. Clarity and bench crafts make up for Alira’s buff, and the 2 points are extremely useful.

Pantheon Powers

Click here to learn how to upgrade Pantheons or view the Divine Vessel vendor recipe.

Pantheon Choices:

🔥 Arakaali is the most synergistic choice, as the reduced DoT taken is excellent. Note that the 20% increased Life/ES recovery upgrade is useless since RF is always on, but the other 2 upgrades are great.

🔥 I recommend Shakari and UPGRADED Yugul, literally in that order. In league-starts and while your Chaos resistance is hard to get effectively, Shakari is great. Once your Chaos res is high enough and Curses are a bigger problem, upgraded Yugul gives Inquisitors Curse Immunity. 30% reduced Curse effect combines with the 75% from +50% effect Consecrated Ground to give us Curse Immunity for an absurdly low cost.

Abberath, Gruthkul, and Ralakesh are also decent options to deal with Ignites, general tankiness, or Bleed (you still want Corrupting Blood immunity).

Notes:

🔥 Upgrades are character-bound, so don't waste extra Vessels on upgrades you won't use.
🔥 They can freely change in town/hideout. Swapping them can be useful.

Endgame Item Basics

Spoiler
This section briefly describes the endgame equipment for both the SSF and Trade versions.

Actual crafting advice and methods are in the PoB Notes.

Unless otherwise noted, Armour and ES hybrid item bases are preferred, as these scale both defense and damage due to RF. Pure Armour bases are the alternative; ES bases can be used situationally or due to item scarcity in SSF, but try to get hybrid or Armour.

SSF

🔥 Wand: The PoB Notes has a detailed method for crafting the endgame wand.

🔥 Shield: Best to worst: Aegis Aurora, Rare Shield (preferably Archon Kite base) with lots of +max Fire Res, or Rise of the Phoenix.

Influenced Rare Shields can roll "Recover 3-5% of Life or Energy Shield (Warlord = Life, Crusader = ES, Shaper = Either) when you Block". Shaper can roll Life or ES recovery, but not both on a single mod.

If you have Aegis or an influenced recovery mod you can take Glancing Blows.

🔥 Body Armour: Life, ES if possible, and defenses. Craft “Gain x% of Maximum Life as Extra Maximum Energy Shield” from your crafting Bench for a huge damage and defensive boost.

🔥 Helmet: Life, Resists/Attributes, influenced Shaper AoE support and/or Elder Burning Damage support.

🔥 Boots: Life, Movement Speed, Resists/Attributes.

🔥 Gloves: Fingerless Silk or Apothecary’s Gloves with Life, Resists/Attributes, Hunter influenced Fire DoT Multiplier.

🔥 Amulet: Ashes of the Stars or “+1 Fire and/or Skill Gems” Rare.

🔥 Rings: Death Rush and/or Vermillion/Opal base with Life, damage, and Resists/Attributes.

🔥 Belt: Leather or Stygian Vise base with Life, Armour, and Resists/Attributes.

Trade

🔥 Wand: Buy a +2 gems (+1 Fire / +1 Spell) wand, or see the PoB Notes for a powerful, cheaper alternative.

🔥 Shield: Aegis Aurora.

🔥 Body Armour: As much Life and ES as possible with the “Gain Life as Extra ES” craft mentioned above.

🔥 Helmet: Influenced Shaper AoE and Elder Burning Damage supports, Life, and Resists/Attributes if possible.

🔥 Boots: Life, Movement Speed, Resists/Attributes.

🔥 Gloves: Crusader base with Eldritch Fire Exposure on Hit and Fire DoT Multi implicits, Life, and Resists/Attributes.

🔥 Amulet: Ashes of the Stars.

🔥 Rings: Rares with Life, Life Regen, Resists/Attributes, and possibly influenced Hunter or Warlord’s Elemental Weakness or Flammability on Hit, respectively.

🔥 Belt: Stygian Vise with Life, Armour, Resists/Attributes, and possibly influenced Hunter % Maximum Life.

🔥 Jewels: Melding of the Flesh and Watcher’s Eye with relevant Determination, Malevolence, Purity of Fire/Ice, etc mods.

Large Clusters with Prismstic Heart, Smoking Remains, Widespread Destruction, or other good Notables. Medium Clusters with a combination of Cooked Alive, Smoking Remains, Vile Reinvigoration, and Brush with Death. Small Life Clusters with Sublime Sensation or Armour with Enduring Composure.

Hardcore Tips

This build is mostly hardcore viable as-is, but hardcore players should be focusing even more on defenses as applicable. Not a lot to say in this section, as RF is one of the naturally tankiest builds you can play. Don’t run bad map mods.

Im gonna try this build as my league starter on console. It looks great!
with what this is different from pohx righteous fire build?
Reserved..Thanks!
"All that fancy sword swinging when all you need is one good stab."
Thank you for sharing, however there's a huge mistake you made in the SSF version, you're using Cruelty support, this gem well give us no added damage whatsoever, because our traps doesn't hit so it well not gain the buff from the cruelty support, unless we have another skill (that hits) supported with cruelty as well, that way when our character gain the buff the traps will gain it as well.

So I think gems like combustion or controlled destruction are best for a league start setup.
