"I appreciate the thought, Shmez! That's really kind of you. The perspective I have is that...everyone goes through stuff, right? The negative stuff sucks. We all go through it in many stages of life. But, it can be encouraging to someone else. When someone sees/hears that you're going through something difficult but you still have your head on your shoulders, it can really edify people. I'll give two examples: - Part of the way that I combat my symptoms is by being a healthy eater. Before my concussion days, I could eat whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted, and I never gain a pound. I loved so many different kinds of foods and snacks. But now, when I go to someone's house, and they put out food that I used to devour (but can't anymore), I simply abstain from eating it. I normally eat before I go out so I don't have to worry about being hungry while someone serves something that I can't partake in. That doesn't sound like much, but I've had many people come up to me and say that my willpower with food, regarding the things I used to love to eat, has reminded them that they too can be strong in moments of temptation, or even preparation. I've had people say it's been a reminder to them with things as simple as how they drive, to as serious as marriage choices. It's been a reminder to people that the "grass isn't greener on the other side". It's ok to go through what you're going through. Crazy eh? That something so small could be so impacting. - Another example would be when my dad died. He died in a hospice quite a few years ago now. Sometimes in a hospice, 3 months will go by without a death. (Dying from cancer is obviously quite an unpredictable timeline.) The night my dad died, he was the first of three people that died that same night, which never happens. My family was able to be there with him as he passed which was really nice, but it was obviously a really hard thing to go through. About an hour after, I was cleaning up some of the coffee cups we had accumulated over the day around his hospice room and I was bringing them down the hall to the community kitchen they have there. Along the way, there was a lady crying heavily outside of her room. I put my tray of cups down and gave her a long hug. As she was going back into the room she was visiting, I told her how sorry I was for her. She gave me a sad look, thanked me, and closed the door. As I was returning to my dad's room (on my way back from cleaning the coffee cups in the kitchen), she saw me pass by and she jumped out quickly to give a much warmer heartfelt thank you. She said one of the nurses told her that I too lost a parent that evening. She said that the fact that I was thinking of other people while going through such a loss changed her whole perspective on life. Now, I don't mean for either of those examples to be a "yay me" type of thing. I make just as many poor decisions with my attitudes as I do good ones. We were just talking about my suffering, so the examples I have are going to be from my perspective/life. Either way, those are just a couple of many examples of how it was important that I too had gone through something rough to be helpful or to really understand. I don't enjoy the fact that I have this concussed life, but there's a realistic, "cup-half-full" approach that really can edify those around us. I guess my point is, even though I'd prefer to have a much healthier life, I know I'm not going through what I go through by accident, and I'm very blessed to see some of the positive change that it's had in people around me. Does that make sense? https://www.ForeverExiled.com/: Forever Exiled, A Path of Exile Podcast
