Yeah, lack of defensive/utility as a league starter comes down to choices you're making, not a flaw in the build.

It's a league starter, so you have to get a little creative at the start. You don't have optimal gear, and need to switch things up!

Use flesh and stone while you feel fragile, and meander towards the golem nodes and ascendencies. You shouldn't be prioritizing ignite nodes until you get to 50+ probably, as most of your early game damage is just from DI.

The build was squishy until 35 or so, but of course it was. I was running 6% spell damage wands and a 3L armor with basically no stats. Once you have even slightly okay randoms (look at my gear, it's horrible) and golems + flesh and stone it works great.

from your post I assume you are going for the golem ascendancies instead of bastion then? can you tell me your reasoning please? thanks
What do you need to convert the lightning to fire damage?
I'm actually going defensive as hell. The DPS feels fine, and I like tankiness on my characters.

I went:

Shaper of Flames -> Liege of the Primordial -> Elemancer, and am planning on going Bastion of Elements with my 4th. If the DPS starts to fall off before I hit 4th lab I'll consider Shaper of Storms, but given my crap tier gear it feels like I have more than enough room to grow on the DPS side right now. I'm still running Flesh and Stone / Hatred instead of Malevolence too.

The rest of my tree more or less matches the golem defensive version of this build, just with no cluster jewels yet.

Oh i See you are going for both defensive ascendancies. Thats a nice approach for sure. I really like the idea of shaper of storms tho, i'll choose one of them. I think i'll go with bastion of elements? looks more interesting than golem

Heya. So I pretty much made this exact build on my own and found this thread looking for what others have done for late game scaling.

I actually took both... I took the 4 golem ascendancy nodes and bastion.

I went shaper of flame -> golems-> bastion.

So far with just hatred in early maps my damage and clear is pretty good and my gear is straight shit.

Unlike a lot of the PoBs posted im specced into block and glancing blows as well.

Between the golems, bastion, arcane cloak, glancing blows, and flasks... i basically never take damage.

Im only in t3 maps though so we will see how late game goes. I'm only on a 5 link with no damage on anything other than hatred so there's tons of room to grow.

Hope that helps.

FWIW I like tanky builds even in softcore. I hate dying. If you wanna go more squishy with better damage there are so many options.

Saw your reply above. I absolutely would NOT recommend skipping either golem ascendancy nodes. They tank a shit ton of damage for you and provide ailment immunity. Also you BADLY need the physical reduction and cast speed so the increased effectiveness is much needed.

Elemancer 100%. The choice is not between those two really, Elemancer is too good. It is more between Shaper of Storms and Bastion of Elements. Tons of damage vs. (imo) questionable defense.
I see! Thanks for the input guys. Was going to mess up then. Bastion just looked OP with so many notables on this build. I think I underestimated the golems! But between shaper of storms and bastion i'll probably go with shaper. I mean, when i get there, if i see im struggling a lot i'll go with bastion but I really hope i can get shaper of storms.

You seem pretty skeptical of Bastion of Elements, but I noticed in a prior post you said it doesn't protect from physical or chaos damage? Where are you getting that from? It's called "Bastion of the Elements", but the description indicates that it blocks ALL damage from what I see.

I don't have it yet and haven't tested, but it just says "Primal Aegis can take 100 damage per Allocated Notable Passive Skill" -- nothing about damage type.
Is it worth it to use flame golem instead of ice one or carrion? I mean he procs EE and whole idea of build on bossing becomes questionable
