0.10.3c Patch Notes

I still think that the loot system is just plain awful for group play.

What I would suggest is for the party leaders to have three looting options for their group, and that they can change freely for their current party:

1. FFA
2. Timed
3. Reserved

The first option would be totally free for all loot system, where the items are not reserved to any players. First comes first served.

The second option would be the current loot system, where the items are reserved for a player with a 2.6 seconds timer with their name associated to that item in some way (either shown below the item or with a timer). I hate the fact that in a big boss fight with the new settings, you cannot track the loot at all since nobody has an idea of who the loot belongs to. Hence, people just freely loot the items once the 2.6 seconds timer ends and then you have no idea who took your chain or unique. If your goal is to reduce the clutter, then you can make the timer as a circle (like the flash loading loading logo on youtube or the loading timer on an apple computer) on the left side of the name instead of having a huge timer bar at the bottom of the item's name. That way, you would have only 2 lines of text for an item, that is the item's name and the player's name.

The third option is a reserved loot system, where map, uniques, rares, etc. are reserved to your character without timer, and nobody can take the loot away unless you drop is back on the ground.

I know of occurrences where either of the three systems are preferred over the others and leaving the choice to the party leader is the best way to go I think, instead of trying to deal with the feedback of hundreds of thousands of players all with their problems with the loot system.
Let me spell it out for you, GGG: THERE IS NO ONE-SIZE-FITS-ALL LOOT SOLUTION! You CANNOT fix this problem by tweaking the numbers. To extend the loot timer sufficiently to mollify the instanced loot crowd, you would have to completely alienate the FFA loot crowd. It is in your best interest to appeal to both kinds of players by giving us a LOOT OPTION to select FFA or instanced loot.

If you truly feel that sharing the gameworld with us carebears somehow ruins PoE's dog-eat-dog nature, then please let us have our own separate playground (i.e., instanced loot league) where we can quietly enjoy our "ruined" version of PoE without ever bothering all the cutthroats.

My friends and I quit D2 solely because of its FFA loot, we have refused to play PoE solely because of its broken loot system, and this patch comes NOWHERE NEAR changing our minds.

Many of us have been clamoring for this kind of solution for a long time already. The real problem is: GGG refuses to listen!

Incorrect. GGG listens. They just don't want to do it.
GGG has a vision of a hardcore game experience. Evidently, loot drop is an important aspect of this experience, at least according to them and most of the core players.

Ask yourselves this. Does GGG NEED to appeal to a wider playerbase by changing the loot system and possibly alienating part of their intended audience?

Start talking about business, maximizing profits, whatever, but the actual answer would be "Nope", since hardcore players are picky and don't want a game that even offers carebear alternatives (see what Trammel did to Ultima Online). This is a niche game, for a niche market. I'm pretty sure it will sustain itself off that audience, without the need to water down their concept.

Nothing will satisfy everyone, but basically satisfying people who have a problem with FFA or responding to even the current loot timer is not, and should not be a priority for GGG. Sorry.

This man speaks the truth.

I like the fact the time for pickup was increased but i liked it better when it showed how items are dropped for. My wife can't tell if the drops are for me or her lol. The colors are 2 close.
How is FFA 'hardcore'?

From what I've experienced, all FFA is about is playing as cut-throat as possible and being essentially a griefer.

It emphasizes running around and hitting the chests and breakables instead of staying with your group to kill monsters in many cases.

To an extent, it prioritizes melee over ranged.

It also makes a lot of people prefer playing solo (just like they did in Diablo 2) for precisely that reason.

I don't mind 'hardcore' playing.

I do mind dealing with people who are following the Greater Internet F***wad Theory (http://penny-arcade.com/comic/2004/03/19). That's not hardcore. What that is is dealing with immature idiots.

I enjoy the game, and I play in Hardcore. I don't suffer idiots, though. Please give me the option to actually play co-op without having to deal with it. Thanks.

You're one lucky man to have a wife that enjoys the same game you do :) I'd have thought that all loot will belong to the wife even when they're named previously.

What is this nonsense about "core players"? Where are the numbers to back up what your'e saying? Most importantly of all, what gives you this sense of entitlement that GGG should only cater to your needs and no one else? Honestly you come off to me as pretty arrogant!

If this is the kind of self-imploding community GGG wants to foster (read: a small group of elitist fanboys), then this game is guaranteed to fade into obscurity.

Edit: toned down the language. I apologize for any unnecessary offense.
