Life habits suggestion thread

Let's combine a thread with little life habits each and every one of us does that they think is beneficial to their general well being.

My first suggestion would be

A cold shower every day.

I've been running lately and now i've fallen into the habit of taking a cold shower when i return.
I start off by putting the water to 0 degree's celsius, then i lower it to -5 and eventually to -10 and stay in that for roughly 5 minutes.

While i'm doing that i'm also regulating my breathing.

The most amazing feeling is when the cold water runs over your head, at least for me it feels like bliss.

And when you get out you have this vivid rush in your body.

I usually end up running around with a naked upper body after that for an hour or so feeling superb. Your body feels very pleasant and hot because of the shift of temperature.

My intuition also tells me it's solid for the nerves and stress.(though i have nothing to back that up since i just feel that)

I think everybody could adopt this in their life without much effort or changes to daily routines.
Though i would say, for this thread in itself, don't mind suggesting more difficult life habits if you think they are beneficial.

Peace,

Don't know if its good, but drinking 0.5l selfmade selfpicked mixed herb tea every day.

Like to leave it cool off and drink over half a day.

I figure everything else i do is pretty much unhealthy.
Spreading salt since 2006
^Got any references for herbs?

I'm sort of on the fence about randomly picking stuff.

I might do a search tomorrow to see which herbs i could pick in my neighborhood tomorrow.
Could perhaps combine it with the running i do, scouting out an area and bringing a bag along.

This reminds me of how sad i always am when its mushroom season and i don't have sufficient experience to pick those :p

Herbs should be safer i reckon.

Sounds like a great habbit to have.

This is good timing, Boem, as I've been thinking about advice, and giving it. I get enthusiastic and like to share ideas and things I've learned and can get a bit "do this!" but giving unasked-for advice is something to be really wary of. it says that we don't trust that person can handle it, and assumes we know best. So hard online, when the medium all gears towards giving opinions, but yeah.

My life habit suggestion is to be mindful of giving people unsolicited advice, rather than support, to find their own answer. How often do we take advice? Yeah. Only when we ask someone and then we filter it anyway.

Sharing "what works for me" is ok, within reason, so I like you have called it suggestions.

Mycology groups here do tours for exactly that reason, if you don't have friends who can teach you the etiquette and safety stuff.

We got a cabin near the woods but it's been years since i made use of it and if i remember correctly they also do teaching groups there aldo very sporadically.

I got no excuses, so it's usually a fleeting thought. If i really wanted i figure i would have digged into it already.

My premise for the other stuff is "does the person desire to change".
I got no time to bash my head against a wall unless im into that mood.("insert reference article trump thread here")

It's painfull to watch people call themselves "unhappy" and grasp why that's the case though and then keeping your mouth shut.
Some people seem to revel in that identity.

It's like they are playing an inner game of going "unhappy => victim => unhappy => victim" and fear letting go of those two persona's.

Give me a suggestion erdelyii, i'm requesting one, your free to fire without holding back :)

*Work out,
Reps
25/22/19/16/13/10/7/4/1
Rotate your muscle groups, with five or so exercises.

Explain that a bit alt, i have no clue what "reps + numbers" means :)

So far i do roughly 2 km daily of interval running usually take 1 day off every 3th day. I'm working my way up since i've been sitting around to much and the last time i got excited and pushed beyond my body's limit i had to take four days off '-.-

i do around 100 push-ups spread out over the day and rest a day when my muscles get to sour.

And then some balance excercises stressing various muscles. Hard to explain in english.

Obviously stretching in between etc

But i don't mind trying other excercises if you got some manuals or video's or can explain them.

Resistance training/lifting weights. 2-3 times per week is good. Reps are how many times to perform the exercise and ideally you should be close to failure by the last one. The range of repetitions you should do depends on your fitness goals and I don't really agree with the suggestion given by the person you quoted, but I do agree with the suggestion that lifting weights is very beneficial.

edit for clarity. Only thing I don't agree with is the repetition numbers.

Oho, fun! What area of your life are you wanting to work on Boem?

Haha I choose healthy enough writer.

Those are great, Charan. If it's any consolation Toxic is stuck in my head too. It's a great pop song, and I played it this morning loud. Twice.

Drawing the various comments together and having a think about advice and people who might be stuck, there's always reasons for not making a change. Descisional balance Sheet is a tool that illustrates that. Definitely possible to work with people in various stages of change, and support that, working towards health in the large sense.

Being in a rut, the grips of an addiction, and so on, these are serious life challenges and they wear us down. We might be in them through our own actions, but there's no point dwelling on how we got there, not when depressed thinking starts to kick in. Your last one Charan,

Finally, never compromise quality of life for quantity. You don't want to be Sad Emo 90s Brad Pitt ugly-crying at a sunrise on a movie screen, do you?

Indeed. But for someone who's got depressed thinking going on, the thought of change very easily leads down a road where "It doesn't matter, I suck and we will all die" is the sign at the edge of the cliff.

That's 100% VALID for that person. Knowing it hurts those around them amongst the "They don't care about me and are better without me" stuff adds to the wallowing mire.

Sitting with difficult emotions, validating them without trying to argue or convince, and holding out hope for that person is sometimes all we can do. It's hard, the more we care about them. Hopefully just being there with empathy and what small company we can offer is enough to make a tiny difference so they can also start to work through stuff - with a trained, objective professional or the next best thing.

Like you said, Alt, online is hard without much information to go by. Can only do our best to not be total assholes while still enjoying this funny playground.

Cheers alt and durian i will keep that in mind when doing excercises.

@Charan that list is beautifull, painfull, eyebleeding, glorious, poignant and smell evoking.
It's a tad much to go to work with though and some seem to require quite specific circumstances to "try out".

Happy or sad your parents didn't apply your anti-writer regiment or you stubborn like a wall?

Peace,

It's more about suggesting a habit you find helps you.

I'm going of the assumption if somebody else value's the habit there is some importance in it.
So i can test them out and see how i find them and so can anybody else reading the thread.

The sky is the limit.

Boem, looks like you were posting when I did. So, what area? Be specific as possible, and bear in mind I come from a place of experience where the spirit of

Dumb Things - Paul Kelly

is the order of the day, all the fucking time :)
