Even with the corrected math, the lightning cluster is still more dps + you get 2 free passive skills, which is very very nice.

However, when you go to a 2 Cluster setup, now the crit stacking starts to make a difference and has the potential to surpass the lightning cluster, but the boss has to be on consecrated ground, so you HAVE to use Holy Flame Totem place it correctly, otherwise the crit chance isn't high enough.

It's not so expensive if you just want those mods.

If you are only looking for +1 and triggered socketed gems you can do a search like this.

If they're dying and you want them around, your options are to add minion resists, minion life leech, and minion life - either from the passive tree or ghastly jewels.

If you don't need them as an emergency meat shield when you cast convocate, then replace them with a golem or Animate Guardian.

Question about crafting a wand. I was able to create a +1 minion spell wand, and curious what to do with it next. I benchcrafted the add fire dmg to spells to block that group coming up, and am planning to use an augment caster mod to try get minion damage. Looking closer at PoEDB though, it looks as though the caster tag is not on the minion mods if you look at each grouping detail. Anyone know if it's even possible to add minion damage with the augment caster seeds? Once finished I'll add the trigger craft, I do know I need an open suffix for that.

Another option is multimod, but if I spend 2 ex I bet I could just buy a better wand to start with. Was excited to hit the +1 spells with alteration, now not sure what to do with it. Yes, I'm a noob.
