Bestiary as a Core Game Mechanic

Correct decision. Though the effort put into it is very much appreciated, a few things felt out of place with it. The capturing nets felt out of place with the flow of combat for me. The same thing with the yellow and red beasts where normal mobs were suddenly bumped up to boss status (most of the times stronger than map bosses actually). Contrary to previous leagues like abyss etc. which I loved, bestiary just didn't appeal to me that much personally to the extent that after some time I just preferred to not bother with it and just skip it alltogether. Once I was in that grinding rhythm of combat/clearing maps, I just couldn't be bothered stopping all the time, pay attention to not dps too much as to not kill the bestiary mob, and then throwing my net. To then take the downtime to go into my bestiary and go through a far too long list of recipes felt a little meh .. After a long day at the office, it just felt more chill/efficient to instead spend that time clearing some maps than to go out of my way to do all that.
Thanks for not adding bestiary to the core game..It had some good things about it, but tbh, it made the game feel too clunky. So thanks for listening to the community.
I think it is a good decision, keep in mind, to have this blob of features as core, the devs would have to
- overhaul the net mechanic, in term on whether even use an item (long term game perspective, you are looking forward to have x inventory slots taken by nets, forever?), and the capture mechanic from the capturing itself (recent iteration where the mob's damage mitigation changes is just awful) to einhar getting on the nerves constantly rambling his nonsense when sending a beast to the menagerie, reminds me of the permanently flashing inventory icon in D3, "ITEMS ARE FUN!!! WE HAVE TO CONSTANTLY REMIND PLAYERS THAT THEY ARE HAVING FUN!!!"
- overhaul the menagerie space, deleting, crafting, beasts as items and so on, from chat info given, UI in general is very uninformative, maybe reducing beast complexity so that it is feasible to remember desired beasts, crafting info given (colors?) to maybe ability to recraft beast into an other beast at cost...
- rework of all the obnoxious things that we would have to go trough every single temporary league (recipe popups anyone?), hunting all the beasts all over every 3 months? Are masters not enough?
- bug fixes and balance changes, red mob difficulty, maybe that changing nets in town finally works...

I originally refused to play this league but now the flashback event made me finally test it. It is EVEN WORSE than I expected.

The nets are annoying as hell. You either accidentally kill the beast or you die from trying too hard not to damage it that much. Or you throw the net on a neighbour beast, because it is kind of hard to hover your mouse over a fast moving, dangerous enemy to aim precisely. Why can't they just drop something like an essence on kill?

Red beasts are mostly a reason to quickly logout if you don't want to die. Again everyone who doesn't play meta is doomed because of lacking balance between new and old skills and builds in general.

The bloated recipe list ist way too long to keep in mind, also it's sometimes difficult to safely look at a dangerous, quickly moving, red beast to check if you need it or not. You also don't get a to-do-list with "unlock these recipes" and an ingame help where to look for the required beasts, you just don't know what recipes exist until you unlock them with a random capture of the right beast.

Why do we need this annoying and extremely bloated and clumsy crafting system anyways? It is just more of the same trash that plagues POE since a long time: Most annoying "fetch" waste of time, awful balance and fucking RNG lottery gambling. Most of the recipes are worthless, others are so much depending on RNG that you are probably better off if you just kill monsters and hope for random drops of good items.

Just rework masters and essences! Like, masters selling all white base items so the amount of trash drops and loot filter problems and annoying fetching could be reduced. You should be able to craft more than one essence on an item. Or base crafting ingerdients on something like the pantheon's divine vessel: Put one into the map device and the boss gets a little stronger.

Finally, I wanted to express my respect to GGG for making the right decision by deleting that whole bestiary mess.
Honestly, I expected them to of course add it to the core game because of their invested effort and say something like "again this is the most successful league of our history", and I suspected the embedding of the flashback event into bestiary to be a propaganda move so GGG could proudly count many flashback accounts as players of bestiary league.
But no, they admitted their failure and thus gained back lost reputation.

Again, my respect for that. Please, GGG, show the same honesty, judgement and consequence also in future and:
- make the labyrinth purely optional and not mandatory for enchantments
- massively reduce the casino gambling RNG. It doesn't make you a better player if you have to try 100 times to finally get the right outcome. Diablo 1 and 2 were great games without any RNG gated content restriction. Free waypoint access to all normal maps after killing the boss; only magic, rare and unique maps should drop!
- give us a useful crafting system were we can contol every mod, line by line. Also allow divine orbs to be used on single mods instead of all explicits.
- no roll differences on unique items. "unique" means "unique"!

Glacial Hammer now has 3-5% Chance to Poison on the character select screen.

I did hundreds of t13+ and didn't find it. (and still miss 3 other red beasts including the ones for craicic and fenumal portals). I gave up and bought them to get the beast bosses challenge.
Thank you for being so fucking cool that you were willing to toss something that you poured so much work into. This is why I keep coming back to PoE challenge leagues. You guys are the best. You are the only game I know of that honors the "cosmetic cash shop only" promise, you are the only devs who know how to bring down servers and bring them right back up again, and you are the only company I know of that has ever beat Blizzard at their own game. It's fantastic that you're able to look at your work and judge it fairly.

Knowing a bit of the development issues you had while building Bestiary helps in understanding why and how it came to be what it is. I agree that it slowed levelling, wasn't really compelling, and the immediate drops never quite seemed to be worth the time/effort to bring down a red beast.

However, it was great that you gave us the chance to create items we may not have found for those that do SSF, or don't farm lab, or those like me that have awful luck when we do farm uber lab.


And I also know that you're all on a tight schedule, and that you need to decide quickly if you're keeping or dropping aspects of a league, but I HAVE to point out that the red/yellow beasts would make for a great addition/replacement to Tora missions. Right now you just rush into a pack of sickly-looking normal beasts and breathe them down. Adding a boss-beast that takes some effort to defeat and that drops rares/uniques would really spice up those dailies/encounters.
Please keep this machanic around ty your faithful subscriber ggg.
