[3.1] Raider - Ice Shot/Barrage / Everything Viable / 1 Week in League / Awesome Swag
" Thanks a bunch, definitely an interesting change to the OP's build. I want to try something like these builds just scared because everyone end game is complaining of one shots a lot. |
|
So where are we getting our frenzy charges from?
|
|
" You get it from the Way of the Poacher Ascendency "Way of the Poacher is a notable Ascendancy passive skill for the Raider. It grants increased attack speed and a chance to gain a frenzy charge on kill or on hitting a rare or unique enemy." |

Hey guys,
after playing this build for a while now i wanted to add my 2 cents to this. First of all, it's a lot of fun. Map clearing and single target dmg is certainly nice. I started this league with a FrostBlade Raider (yeah, the mathil one). It was a nice starter, but i got a bit annoyed with single target damage and looked on the forum for the next build i wanted to do. Tendency was a bow build and suddenly i stumbled upon this little thread here. Fortunatly i already had 2 big uniques of the build (Starkonja's and QotF), as the FrostBlade build uses them as well (and i got pretty lucky with 6 linking the QotF, admitted). So i saw the opportunity to switch from melee to bow without even having to level a new char. Since both builds are Raider (even the same Asendancy points). It cost me 30 regret orbs to reskill and suddenly i had gone from melee FrostBlade to IceShot/Barrage bow. Pretty neat for a few regrets and it saved me time. As always i opened this build in Path of Building and started to squeeze for more dmg and life. Now many have stated dying a lot and not having enough damage. Currently i'm sitting on 5,4k life, which is enough, but not for facetanking every attack against you. You gotta know the bosses and their attacks, or at least recognize a big hit coming to get away in time. I might be able to hit 6k life if i invest a lot more into jewelery to get some T1 life rolls, but i'm not sure if i'll go that far. So far the hp is ok, as long as you know when to blink/run away. In other words, don't be shocked this build is a squishy, cause less than 6-6,5k life is simply not much. So life on gear should be your prio by all means. For damage i changed a few things here and there. Not running Phys to Lightning in my barrage setup, since it doesn't provide as much damage as other gems. And that little bit of phys damage left is not an issue for me. I also don't find Herald of Ice with Curse on Hit very reliable, since most of the time you shatter all enemies thus not cursing anything (the curse only applies to enemies hit by a shattered foe beside them), so the socket slots are wasted. Instead i run Projectile Weakness with Cast when damage taken, which is way more reliable. Regarding tooltip dps in hideout. Don't fall for this. The numbers will look low. But you don't have frenzy charges up, enemies aren't chilled/frozen/cursed and the Bow 100% more and Point Blank aren't added either. So if you wanna know the actual damage you gotta use Path of Building. I cleared nearly all maps by now, not all deathless ofc, since sometimes you just go yolo with dem rolls on maps :D Guardians, i had deathless Phoenix and Minotaur. Chimera is a bitch though. And i would recommend doing him last, when all your gems are 20/20 and you got at least one 6L. In the end i needed all my portals. Haven't gotten a Hydra yet. But the goal is shaper for sure. Here is my gear with comments and below my PoB pastebin link. So you can have a look yourself what i changed on tree, gems, jewels etc. Gear:
Spoiler
I haven't tested a different bow yet, as i think the synergy between Point Blank and the 100% more bow damage at close range is pretty sweet. Knockback kinda goes against that, but it also helps us to keep stuff away. For damage upgrades: getting "+2 additional barrage projectiles" would be awesome for single target. But so far the price is around 20ex for a starkonja's with that enchant. So i opted for the ice shot one. You could also use a Rat's nest helm, for the prize of loosing hp. To mitigate that i would recommend getting a belly of the beast with Rat's nest. But belly is another really expensive item this league, escpecially 6L. 5 is around 80c. And then you'd want to go armour, rather than evasion i think. Nice rare quiver. Upgrades would be a Drillneck with "+1 arrow" enchant. Pretty expensive still. Without the enchant it's less damage. Same goes for other unique quivers. Without the enchant you loose damage. BUT, since the price for a Dying Sun Ruby Flask has dropped hard lately, i will get one of those, adding way more damage druing flask effect, for less cost. Using gripped gloves is a no-brainer imo. Don't use lab enchant on them or they loose their implicit! As you can see, my two rings are not optimal with life. One having nearly none (the Str gives a little bit) and the other a mediocre roll. I will probably buy some in the future with better rolls. Now here is something relevant. Wise Oak is a very good flask IF you can balance your resistances to be all the same. This on the other hand makes it a lot tougher to find good/better jewelery ofc. But if you can do that, you will have damage reduction for ALL elements, and even penetrate ALL elemental resistances of enemies. I tend to recommend this as it boosts survivabillity for the build. If you can't get a balance on resistances, opt to have cold resistance the highest. This flask also enabled me to use only one unique Ice Shot jewel, as i find the cold pen high enough (see PoB for the numbers). And since we are evasion based, an evasion flask is a no-brainer as well. Rotgut enables us to have Onslaught during boss fights, plus it's a really nice movement speed boost. Atziri flask, get one! Witchfire, great defensive boost and also good for damage. I swap this in and out, depending on maps. Since i don't have a lot of crit chance. But most of the time it rests in my inventory. Big boost for boss fights though. Life flask for lab runs, since we have vaal pact. PoB pastebin, with fully buffed stats vs standard bosses: https://pastebin.com/e1ty30fd My poe profile: https://www.pathofexile.com/account/view-profile/goopQ/characters Char is "EiszapfenKnarre". One last thing regarding elemental penetration. Cold pen is at 33% atm with the Wise Oak flask. Switching Ice Bite for Cold Penetration in the Barrage setup might be usefull against Guardians/Shaper. But according to PoB it would still net a dmg loss. You could add cold pen to the Ice Shot setup, but i like faster attacks more. There are a few better options though. Like Pierce, Innervate, Crit Damage, Slower Projectiles, Added cold and Elemental Focus (which kills the Ice Bite aspect of freezing and shattering). It's up to the player :) If you have any questions feel free to ask. Edit// Adding a Dying Sun is a huge dps boost. BUT, you loose dmg with Ice Shot. I assume this is because of the changed resistance balance. Weirdly enough, this is not the case for Barrage. I'm confused. My conclusion: use Dying Sun purely for bosses. Edit2// I fiddled around more. Since Dying Sun gives +50% to fire resistance, i had to get rid of the roll on the gloves, so in the end the flask doesn't push fire over cold for the penetration. This is only in PoB. Still have to get gloves without fire resistance in the game itself. So, if you opt to get a dying sun, your usual fire resistance will be around 30-40% without the flask active. Otherwise you will loose the benefit of cold pen from wise oak. TIL. Last edited by goopQ#5930 on Aug 29, 2017, 12:29:12 PM

Interesting, I am doing similar build.
I dropped Point Blank and use Death's Opus instead of Chin Sol since I am not very comfortable with hugging bosses. I run Belly of the Beast instead of Queen of the Forest and I am not really sure why Starkonja helmet is that exciting. I prefer a helmet with big accuracy roll life and resistances which allows me to get better offensive jewelry. Given that I have distance to bosses and 5.8k hp it is a bit more comfortable on survivability and mapping up to guardians is fine. Guardians themselves I found Chimera to be fine, my main issue is hydra, that is where queen of the forest would really come in handy. In barrage I dropped phys to lightning as well. My barrage 6-L set up: Barrage - Added cold - Ice Bite - Elemental damage with Attacks - Cold penetration - Elemental Focus I also run orb of storms with curse on hit frostbite and PC on crit to add squeeze a tiny bit more crit out of barrage. As the previous poster I added wise oak to have a bit more cold penetration. It may be an interesting idea to replace cold pen and elemental focus with added lightning and slower proj. This way one would get some nice shocks which may make a difference. Did anyone try that? Just one question after all this: why Starkonja? Last edited by SocialFox#5809 on Sep 1, 2017, 5:46:28 PM

" Yes this is quite a big point of this build, being in their faces :D Since this is my first real bow build i'm used to it, from all the melee builds before. " Belly is definitly nice with the big hp pool. But i also think it's too expensive still to make it a viable starter armour. QotF is a lot cheaper, and has been from the start on. " Are those 2 cold pen gems really stacking? " Something i should try and see if i like it. I know i used this on a HoWa Raider in Breach. " Dmg according to PoB vs Shaper: Setup 1: Barrage - Elemental Dmg with Attacks - Added lightning - Ice Bite - Added cold - Slower proj Enemy not shocked: 1,3million dps Shocked: 1,9million Setup 2: Barrage - Elemental Dmg with Attacks - Ele focus - Ice Bite - Added cold - GMP Enemy not shocked: 1,5million dps Shocked: 2,2million ! Bear in mind you could still swap GMP with inc. crit dmg, slower proj, cold pen, hypothermia. Whereas Hypothermia would give the biggest boost up to 2,5million when the enemy is shocked. So to me this looks, like we need to add a vinktar flask :) " Imo, Starkonja synergizes very well with QotF and the evasion theme in general. It has a pretty good eva pool. It reduces incoming dmg by 50% when on low life, plus boosts eva by 150%. Both things act as a nice defensive mechanism. Which is usefull, since with this build you are in the front. It has a high life roll and adds dmg through incr attack spead and crit chance. Just fits well if you ask me. Also i think you loose a lot of dmg when you drop Chin Sol and Point Blank. It's just such a big dmg increase. 100% more bow damage plus 50% from point blank. Btw, the range until point blank starts to have a negativ impact on dmg is not as small as you'd think. https://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/File:Point_Blank_distance.jpeg And, "The 'Close Range' modifier applies to monsters within distance of 20 units[1] (the radius of cleave)." from Chin Sol. Without both things, my build would do about 74k dmg outside of 35 radius. I mean, those two things are the main point of the whole build. |

very nice build, Im lvl 96 atm with it. Very fast clear, do all content & lot of fun

" Sorry, it was supposed to be cold pen and elemental focus. " Well we still have to drop Ele focus to get shocks frm barrage. There is vaal lightning trap of course. " I made it my second character after sparker and after I have read Ice Bite gem description properly, so currency was not that big of an issue. " I agree with you here. I like 100% crit multi and 2 additional arrows for barrage from death's opus but they definitely give less if you are able to consistently get bonus from point blank. Especially since I wasn't able to go above 46% crit unless I put inc critical stikes in (elemental focus is better though). I wasn't very comfortable with this kind of archer playstyle though but it is definitly something that I am looking forward to learning in the future. |

" Dropping Ele focus is too big of a dps loss imo. But with a vinktar we can shock stuff without having to do it through barrage itself. Gonna test that soon, once i figured which Vinktar i wanna get. Btw, i'm sitting now at 5,7k hp, so close to your 5,8k (if that's still the case now). //Edit Vaal lightning trap does wonders. Highly recommend it :D Also an overflowing chalice flask. My flasks right now: Diamond flask, Dying Sun, Wise Oak, Atziri, Overflowing Chalice. Last edited by goopQ#5930 on Sep 2, 2017, 8:59:07 AM

"Shocks nearby Enemies during Flask effect, causing 10% increased Damage taken"
Right, now I see why! " I am not skilled enough to drop HP flask vs bosses yet :) |
