Depends on goal and play style I guess. If you want to farm some Breach boss or sth you will want lots Chaos for Zana.

If you mean first time through story mode: Overlevel & outgear with tanky build. And research the worst offenders (Innocence etc) before doing them.
If you mean maps - way more complicated & depends. Maps cant be outgeared the way story mode bosses can be outgeared.

If you want to make a build mostly for that I would recommend a tanky boss killer totem build with good armour, good ehp and some life regen.

Chaos Recipe is definitely not necessary.
You might want to run Regal Recipe until you have enough for crafting purposes, but you won't have to sustain doing so -- getting like 15 Regals should make you set for a good amount of time...

Ah okay, this is fair. I'm not at that level of maps yet... still hanging out in the Aqueduct atm. Gotta get a Tabula, or at least a 5L before I leave Act 9.

I use the chaos recipe:

1) Artificial motivation.
2) Uniques from level 8 masters.
3) Re-roll maps that have THAT affix. (THAT being different for different characters. Current character can't do elemental reflect.)

Chaos Orbs drop frequently enough (if you're only using Chaos Orbs to reroll maps and craft the occasional item) that you don't have to do the Chaos Orb recipe.

Artificial motivation is strange :P And I don't know what maps you're running that you're not getting Regals instead anyway... Especially considering you have level 8 Masters?

But... you have a 5L body armor on. Why are you stalling on getting to maps? To get that Tabula? 5L with res. + Life > Tabula :P Just 'cause your body armour is white doesn't mean you can't craft it later.

And why are your gloves and boots off? :|

I augment the rares I get from maps with rares from the master mission dailies to break the pattern.

PS I wish I had your Carnage Heart ammy :( I'm using , which is respectable as far as Frostblades ammys go... but really it seems more like a Vaal Orb candidate than anything gr8
