Two reasons I can think of; to mule a gem from a different starter class, or in case you die.

In longer races it might be worth it to start as a witch to get fire trap, and flame totem before starting as your preferred class. One can also make the decision to spend more time to stash things in case of death. Both of these have a bit of time spent vs value added in any race.
